Today we're launching a legal challenge against the European Commission’s recent decision to re-approve glyphosate for 10 more years. That would mean 10 more years of farmers and citizens being exposed to this potentially toxic weedkiller. Together with Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe, GLOBAL 2000, Générations Futures, Pesticide Action Network Netherlands and PAN Germany, we examined the glyphosate re-approval process in detail. We discovered that the EU Commission had overlooked many recent studies that showed: ❌ Elevated cancer risk ❌ Major impacts on brain and gene function ❌ An alarming mortality rate among insects, especially bees There's enough scientific evidence to take glyphosate off our fields and out of our bodies once and for all. So today, we requested the Commission to review its approval. If they refuse to look at the evidence that glyphosate harms farmers first and foremost and our environment, we're ready to move on to the next step of this legal battle. Because farmers shouldn’t have to choose between protecting their health and making a living, it’s up to the industry to find safe alternatives to toxic pesticides, and to authorities to safeguard this. The health of EU farmers, the general public and our environment is at risk, after the European Commission’s recent decision to re-approve glyphosate for 10 more years.    That would mean 10 more years of EU citizens being exposed to this potentially toxic weedkiller.    So today at ClientEarth we're using the democratic tools at our disposal under the Aarhus Convention to request that the EU reviews their glyphosate re-approval.   I'm proud to join forces with Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe, GLOBAL 2000, Générations Futures,Pesticide Action Network Netherlands, and PAN Germany.   Together, we examined the glyphosate re-approval process in details.   We discovered that the EU Commission had overlooked many recent studies that showed:    - Elevated cancer risk  - Major impacts on brain and gene function  - An alarming mortality rate among insects, especially bees    There's enough scientific evidence to take glyphosate off our fields and out of our bodies once and for all.    If the Commission refuses to look at the evidence that glyphosate harms farmers, the public in general and our environment, we're ready to move on to the next step of this legal battle.     Because farmers shouldn’t have to choose between protecting their health and making a living, it’s up to the industry to find safe alternatives to toxic pesticides, and to authorities to safeguard this. EU citizens should not be the victims of these decisions.   My hope in challenging that decision is that we'll stir discussions and reflections at the political level and encourage a positive domino effect among Member States.   I'll keep you updated.

Today, the European Commission proposes to ban thiacloprid residues in imported food. We ask Member States to support it and speed up adoption. Stop this very toxic EU-banned reprotoxic #pesticide. Since 2015, we have known that #thiacloprid is toxic for human reproduction. It is also a suspected carcinogen and it is very toxic to #bees. According to the pesticide law, pesticides that are toxic for reproduction must immediately be banned to ensure protection for EU citizens. Thiacloprid was only banned in 2020. This should have led to an immediate ban on the presence of its residues in all food products, including imported food. To avoid double standards between the EU and third countries as soon as 2020. However, it took the Commission 3 more years to act. Last year, it proposed to allow thiacloprid residues in imported food. The proposal was not supported by a qualified majority of Member States and was vetoed by the European Parliament thanks to Anja Hazekamp, Marie Arena, Michal Wiezik and Jutta Paulus. https://lnkd.in/eRAyXdUq

This shouldn’t be so historic but it is. And this quote sums up exactly what is wrong with the way the U.S. regulates substances that end up in our bodies and the environment. To repeat: Corporations are not people, and the burden should be on THEM to prove a product is safe before they make a profit on it. Before they use the rest of us as human guinea pigs. “Pesticides like DCPA remain on the market even as scientific evidence increasingly confirmed carcinogenic and other detrimental health impacts in part because such products, by default, are treated as safe unless shown otherwise. The onus is on agencies like the EPA and FDA to gather direct scientific evidence that products do harm, not on the manufacturers to prove they don’t. That dynamic doesn’t exist in much of Europe, or in Canada; under those systems, any evidence-based concerns about the safety of industrial products, like pesticides, necessitate that manufacturers prove the product is safe before exposing the public to it. “
