It’s National Carers week. Many people dedicate many hours to caring whether for a family member, neighbour or friend. We have to support these people in the work place too as they manage those commitments. No choice but to care report: 62% of those who are currently providing or those who have previously provided unpaid care said that they had no choice in taking on the role because no other care options were available – this is around 10 million people. [1] The impact of caring has been more negative than positive for all areas current and former unpaid carers were asked about, particularly for mental health (63%), physical health (53%), Job and ability to work (48%) and finances and savings (47%). The negative impacts as a result of caring were also felt most strongly by those who had no choice but to take on an unpaid caring role as well as women and those aged 45-54. The research also found that 73% of members of the public surveyed for the research think that unpaid carers should receive more support from the next Government, particularly financial support and investment in social care. #weareallcarers

Caring is hardly something we’re likely to shout about in a work context – particularly as women, when any kind of ‘distraction’ in the form of family can so easily be used against us. This isn’t helped by the terms ‘care’, ‘carer’ and ‘caring’ themselves. Of course, I care for all three of my young children. But I also provide care for one of them. It’s a different thing altogether, even though the word is the same. — This week is Carers Week. In the UK, 1 in 7 people juggle work and care. On average, 600 people A DAY leave work on account of their caring responsibilities. That is a colossal loss for everyone involved. I know first-hand just how much strength, stamina and skill is required for caring. Caring means I am adaptable. Caring means I am determined. Caring means I am resilient. Dedication is the act of being fully devoted to something, whether this is something intangible, such as a task, goal, or desired outcome, or something that you can feel yourself physically being a part of, such as such as a cause, religion, sports teams, or another person. 3moUnpopular opinion: this isn't always bad. I had a handful of these types of promotions in my early 20s. I was always eager to take on roles that would give me exposure and experience that I knew I could leverage into a title and salary at a different company. Managers can usually give their people responsibility easier than raises or titles, and experience can be just as valuable.
