Cleveland-Cliffs recently hosted Dept. of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm at its Butler Works plant in Pennsylvania. The Secretary’s visit followed the recent DOE final transformer efficiency standard rule providing for the continued utilization of Grain-Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) in virtually all of electrical distribution transformer end markets. Cleveland-Cliffs is the sole producer of GOES in the United States, and was selected for award negotiations for up to $75 million in total funding from the DOE to pursue a decarbonization investment at Butler Works. During the visit, Secretary Granholm toured the plant and met with Cleveland-Cliffs’ Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Lourenco Goncalves, company officials, employees as well as union leaders from the United Auto Workers (UAW), the United Steelworkers (USW) and the International Association of Machinists (IAM). Mr. Goncalves hosted a speaking program with Secretary Granholm and other invited speakers that was live streamed on the Company’s YouTube channel. The on-demand version of the program can be found on Cleveland-Cliffs' YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/dG6QuMnb

A wonderful CEO who believes in investing in his employees and the future of steelmaking within the United States. There are some changes we could make to be more efficient and save costs overall. By utilizing better communication overall throughout all of the facilities. But overall I believe everyone is actively putting fourth the effort to make the steel industry strong within the company. It's nice to see the government get on board an recognize that steel is vital to the American economy. As well as vital to the defense of America as a whole. Hopefully these good working relationships will continue overall. Government, Cliffs, and Cliffs union employees. So that overall we can see growth overall for everyone involved. Best luck and wishes to all of those whom contribute. May the future be bright for all of us.

Ah, the home town steel mill! Our family spent hundreds of years combined working that plant. From Columbia Steel days to Armco, to today. Have tons of great historical items and memories.
