Happy #CleanAirDay! ☁
Breathing clean air should be a human right, however too many of our communities are experiencing high levels of air pollution because of where they live.
Our Environmental Justice Measure shows the differences in how people across Westminster are impacted by air pollution and other environmental factors: https://lnkd.in/eKjhdBge. It clearly shows that the wards with the highest level of deprivation and ethnic diversity are suffering increased negative environmental impact (i.e. heat risk, flood risk, poor air quality, lack of tree canopy cover, lack of access to sustainable transport, low proximity to open spaces, and poor energy efficiency of buildings).
We have been taking action and have successfully:
- Increased electric vehicle charging points to 2,500
- Rolled out the UK’s largest electric refuse collection fleet
- Made 11 'School Streets' permanent
- Launched a new cargo bike logistics hub
- Launched our new online air quality data platform, and much more.
Going forward, we want to continually consider how we address social inequality through truly holistic environmental action on air quality and the climate and ecological emergencies.
Check out this fantastic video of primary school pupils in Westminster learning and taking action for Clean Air Day. A huge well done to Liam Moyles for supporting Westminster school's like Christ Church Bentinck C of E Primary School to improve local air quality through the Schools' Clean Air Fund. 💚
Today is #CleanAirDay 🍃
We engaged with pupils at Christ Church Bentinck C of E Primary School in Westminster to help them understand the effects of air pollution on their health and the environment and empowered them to be a part of the solution 🙌
Our Schools’ Clean Air Fund is open for applications to help Westminster schools improve the quality of air surrounding them.
