The interview with our good friend Oscar Fernando Rodríguez Vélez, VP Innovation of Grupo Bolívar S.A., published this week in Portafolio, is a good opportunity to write a few words about our work with this Colombian and international corporation, a client that has supplied us with innumerable learnings and opportunities to develop ourselves and with several good friends with which our relationship goes way beyond the commercial aspects. Very briefly, the facts: 18 years working together, of them 3 first years intensively laying the foundations, 1400 associates trained as Innovation Coaches of various types, several dozens of projects worked on together, several thousands (!) of innovation projects implemented independently or with remote support, numerous prizes and recognitions (in Colombia and internationally). Distilling here a few of the key success factors you can use as guidelines: 1) Full commitment of the very top management – not in words but in budgets, headcount, decisions. Unwavering (even in tougher times). 2) They nominated several full-time employees from the very start, even when it was not yet 100% clear what they would be doing with all this time. Gradually headcount grew to several dozen currently. 3) Concrete measurable goals where set from the outset, but they were reasonable, and dynamic, without exerting undue pressure on participants prematurely. 4) We kicked off with those divisions and departments whose heads were willing and even enthusiastic, we didn't push ourselves against the will of any leaders. Eventually, they all joined the journey and successes, but some took their time, and that was fine, since each leader has their own priorities. 5) The program kept expanding with results and learnings, both in scope and in number of participants, while our role as facilitators kept decreasing, as we handed off our roles gradually to trained associates. These days we are brought in by Grupo Bolivar from time to time, when we have something new and exciting to offer or when a new need arises that requires external assistance. #Innovation is a topic that has recently captured widespread attention. Through this course offered by #Harvard, I have been able to clarify many concepts that were initially unclear to me. The importance of looking beyond the obvious, of prioritizing a sea of possible solutions, identifying the assumptions we make and challenging them through hypothesis and experimentation, understanding how to present mutual benefits to key stakeholders, as well as embracing continuous learning in the innovation process are crucial if you wish to implement these strategies within your organizations.
