We were at the United Nations General Assembly last week, delivering a simple but critical message: Clean water is at the heart of protecting global health 🌎 Here are some reflections from our colleagues who showed world leaders at #UNGA78 why water, sanitation and hygiene are essential to making progress across all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 👇 🔹 What went well: We were pleased to see member states recognise the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene in healthcare centres and its role in slowing the spread of infectious diseases, reducing the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance and ensuring the safety of health workers. 🔸 What didn’t: Despite these advances, water was rarely mentioned by world leaders at the SDG Summit. Action hasn’t followed declarations made on SDG6 – clean water and sanitation for all – which is crucial to making progress across all global goals, including education, health and gender equality. 💠 What we urgently need: Political commitment. Every $1 spent on hygiene returns $15 on healthcare. The solution is achievable, affordable and central to protecting public health everywhere. World leaders need to close the say-do gap and provide universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene to everyone, everywhere. #UNGA #GlobalHealth #ClimateAdaptation #SDGSummit

First Lady of Kenya Rachel Ruto issues a clear and compelling call to action: Africa must have universal clean cooking now, which, in turn, would empower women and girls. More than 900 million Africans lack access to clean forms of cooking, but women and girls suffer the most from this dire need. Women and girls lose an average of 1.5 hours a day collecting fuel sources – rather that working or going to school. Sadly, some 60% of women and children – as women still do most of the cooking as they watch over their children – suffer early deaths related to smoke inhalation and indoor air pollution. Tapping the combined resources of both governments and businesses can help with adopting affordable, reliable, renewable, and sustainable energy services, including clean-cooking technologies. Would you like to learn about climate change anxiety among the youth in Myanmar? With the issues of global warming, climate change, and rising temperatures, engaging young people is crucial in mitigating these problems and preserving our world. To address these concerns, Group 1 from the Young City Shapers program's Cohort 7 conducted a survey in March on climate change anxiety among young people in Myanmar. Based on the results of this survey, we are organising a webinar named "Pathways to Triple-Zero: Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty, Zero Exclusion." For this webinar, we have invited three speakers to discuss initiatives aimed at achieving zero carbon, zero exclusion, and zero poverty. Our speakers are: Bhone Zay Htike - Bhone Zay Htike studies social science and environmental awareness. He is an alumni member of the Young City Shapers, MYLP, and the YEAH program. Currently, he is participating in an environmental sustainability field trip. U Kaung Myat - U Kaung Myat is the founder and principal of Dekina Agri-Business Management Institute. He is also the director of Royal ABLE Consultancy Co., Ltd, and Royal Ramanya Land Agribusiness Co., Ltd. Additionally, he owns Dekina Agri-Livestock Farm. Hein Htet Soe - Hein Htet Soe has been an activist in the LGBTIQA community since 2017. He is the project manager at Kumudra Social Life Support Association, focusing on HIV prevention and SOGIESC awareness among LGBTIQA individuals and their families. He is also involved in social media campaigns about gender and social inclusion and is a trainer for LGBTIQA community capacity-building projects. Last week, the SDG Summit took place in New York, reminding us of the importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in taking humanity forward. However, it often feels like SDGs are spoken about in places like New York, London, and Geneva, without reaching grassroots communities. This is particularly true in South African townships, where awareness and investment in SDGs are lacking. We found almost all community members, had no knowledge of SDG’s and couldn’t recognise the goals. To address this gap, our centre has invested in an SDG board, inviting visitors to choose a goal they are passionate about. More awareness needs to be raised to involve grassroots communities, especially in the global south, in achieving our SDGs. Let's work together to make SDGs a reality for all. We would love to do some work in the future with Willem Fourie to bring SDG’s to more townships communities in South Africa. 💧💧💧Water is Life, But Unequally Distributed: The Plight of Ugandan Women and Children The phrase "water is life" rings true universally, but its weight feels particularly heavy in places like Uganda, where access to clean water remains a daily struggle for many. Here, life's most basic necessity comes at a cost, measured not in currency, but in distance, time, and health. The burden of fetching water often falls on the most vulnerable - women and children. According to UNICEF, Ugandan women and girls walk an average of 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) every day to collect water, a distance equivalent to two marathons a week. Imagine carrying heavy containers under the scorching sun, sacrificing precious hours that could be spent on education, childcare, or income generation. This unequal burden is further amplified by #climatechange . Erratic rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and prolonged droughts are exacerbating water scarcity, forcing women and children to travel even farther in search of this life-giving resource. The consequences are dire. The time spent collecting water translates to lost opportunities for education and economic empowerment. The water itself, often sourced from unsafe wells or stagnant pools, carries the risk of 💧waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhea, impacting their health and wellbeing. "Aisha, a 12-year-old girl, spends half her day fetching water, missing vital school lessons that could shape her future. Mary, a mother of three, struggles to carry heavy water containers while pregnant, putting her health and the baby's at risk. These are not isolated incidents. They represent the lived experiences of millions of Ugandans facing the brunt of water scarcity and climate change. So, what can be done? 💧Investing in water infrastructure, such as boreholes and rainwater harvesting systems, can bring clean water closer to communities. 💧Investing in climate-resilient agriculture can help communities adapt to changing weather patterns and ensure food security. 💧Empowering women and girls, through education and access to resources can equip them to advocate for their needs and build a more sustainable future. The fight for water justice in Uganda is a fight for human rights, gender equality, and a sustainable future. By recognizing the specific challenges faced by women and children, we can develop solutions that truly make water accessible for all, ensuring that this precious resource becomes a source of life, not a burden to bear. Remember, every drop counts. 🌍 Exciting news from our Climate Intersections Program! 🌿 Last week marked the inception of our Climate Equity project, a pilot initiative we're launching with Ushahidi in Uganda at amplifying community voices, experiences, and needs in combating climate change. 👏 As we embark on this journey, we're deeply appreciative of the support from the Yumbe District Chief Administrative Officer and District Council officials who were present at the inception. Together, we held a dynamic community engagement session with government representatives, community leaders, women, youth, and people living with disabilities to discuss climate action. We also trained our data champions who will be essential in gathering insights from their communities. Plus, we're thrilled to announce our partnership with Yumbe GBV Reduction Network (YUGNET) to ensure smooth coordination and strong community mobilization efforts to amplify grassroots voices. 👥 Engaging with local administration, groups, and voices is pivotal for the success and sustainability of our initiatives.
