What does health equity look like in Oregon? It looks like investing in communities that are creating solutions to systemic barriers that exacerbate health disparities within their community. Wheelchair users wait 6-8 WEEKS or longer to receive simple repairs on their mobility devices, without which they may be completely immobile. And preventative maintenance that keeps users active and healthy is not covered by insurance. Oregon Spinal Cord Injury Connection hosts a Wheelchair Maintenance Workshop in Portland and Medford, OR to address a critical gap in DME services for Oregon wheelchair users. Want to be part of the solution? Let's partners to invest in this community-driven solution. #health #equity #disability #community #solutions #investinhealth Oregon Health Authority AllCare Health Health Share of Oregon CareOregon
There are over five million wheelchair users in the United States. According to a 2021 University of Pittsburgh study, more than half of all their wheelchairs need repairs on average every six months—and fixing them can take months at a time. But what’s taking so long, what causes damage to wheelchairs in the first place, and why do users sometimes have to bear at least some of the costs themselves?

There’s no money in children’s social care, they tell us. Yet last year local councils paid CareTech more than half a billion pounds for the care of children and young people for the first time … £511 million, mostly for children’s homes and foster care. In turn, CareTech made a gross margin of 32% on the services it provides, paid £15 million to quit the stock market and paid interest charges of £16 million on debts of £300 million amassed to go private. Shareholders took £16 million in dividends. Other nuggets: key management were paid £7.2m last year, including bonuses of £2.6m. Directors and employees cashed in £5m in share options. The company paid £878,000 in rent in respect of properties owned by directors. To help meet repayments CareTech has already done a £302m sale and leaseback of homes and schools, so it no longer owns a vast swathe of the properties it uses. A reminder that almost one-third of CareTech’s children’s homes fail to meet Ofsted’s modest standard of ‘good’, including many that are subject to compliance notices because of safeguarding failures. Privatisation of foster care and children's homes is bad for children and families but also bad for the taxpayer. The toxic legacy is generational. It doesn't have to be this way. https://lnkd.in/eUM2bdFQ

We believe that we can take care of each other in affirming and consensual ways, without involuntary actions. At THRIVE, your consent matters. We will support and respect you without forcing interventions.
