You may or may not have seen several posts about an upcoming virtual conference called A Brave Space for Black Fundraisers. It’s an event organized by Camila Pereira, PhD, Christal M. Cherry, Nneka Allen, CFRE, COC, PCC and myself. The conference starts in four weeks, and if you are a Black fundraiser or Black person working in the social impact sector, attending this conference is a choice we hope you feel empowered to make. Here are just a handful of gleaming gems from yesterday: In 'Is Your Small Charity Any Good?' with Nigel Kippax and panelist Anj Handa, Janine Edwards, Ben Wittenberg and Lesley Michaelis we heard: 💎 'Be honest with prospective trustees about the workload and the importance of what the role involves. Don't undersell it!' 💎 'Lead with shared understanding and the vision not ego.' 💎 'Beneficiaries should be able to hold trustees to account. Facilitate this!' 'How can grant-making charities accelerate progress on trustee diversity?' chaired by Dr Ambreen Shah with George Imafidon MBE, Abid Hussain, Catherine Seymour and Paul Streets gave us: 🔥 Becoming more diverse shouldn't be about representation; it’s about the understanding what diverse perspectives bring. 🔥 It's not optional for grant makers' boards to become more diverse - it’s an imperative. And there was a salutary reminder from Kevin Taylor-McKnight, who noted that any mention of an LGBTQI perspective was absent from this discussion, that there is always room on this journey for self-reflection and improvement from all of us. Come and here him speak on board heterosexism on Friday! And we’ve had this lovely bit of feedback about Leon Ward's session: 'What is a Trustee and How Do I Become One' was awesome. Hand out Branded Swag 👕 T-shirts, pens, bumper stickers, or water bottles. People love freebies, and it's some low-cost marketing for your organization. 2. Throw a Party🕺Host a dinner or ice cream party to celebrate volunteers. Share how much their efforts mean to the organization. 3. Give a Shout Out 🤳Spotlight volunteers on social media. Post their photo along with heartfelt thanks. Public recognition matters to some. 4. Naming Honors 🏫 For exceptional volunteers, consider naming something in their honor.
