When did casually using casteist slurs within the analysis of brand identities become okay? And why is it that none of the brand representatives being interviewed saw through the insensitivity of this - let alone calling associations with casteist slurs "negative PR"?
This is exactly why people have been pointing out the importance of having better, more diverse representation within our advertisement agencies and newsrooms. The bare minimum that senior editors can be expected to do is have a better understanding of how layered language is - and a simple recognition of it, followed by appropriating it, is just not okay.

The festival of Makar Sankranti honors the hard work of farmers who eagerly anticipate the rewards of their labor. What makes Sankranti interesting is how it stands as a testimony to India’s diversity. No two regions have the same style of celebrating the same festival. For example, numeours beautiful kites take over the skies in regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat — In fact, the whole world comes down to witness the spectacle of the Kite festival. Punjab celebrates Lohri, it is Pongal down south, Bihu in the east and so on and so forth.
The one thing common amidst such great diversity is, however, the love for food. The traditional food customs followed far and wide seem to be the one uniting factor, thereby, proving yet again how different we are and yet we are all the same.

With 54 plants and 11 bottling plants.
India is their 5th largest market.

Last night after a walk, I visited a side stall for my daily nicotine fix, I was near a village in Sawai Madhopur, and I wanted the normal Marlboro Advance, or the big one these days as the company has started offering the small ones as well. Well, I did not get the big one as the shopkeeper told me the big ones are not demanded by village side people. However, I thought it might have been due to price. What baffled me was that the same small stall was selling Red Bull and Predator. The difference between the price range of the product sold by the stall was quite surprising. The last highest product in regards to price was at Rs10 followed by Predator being sold at Rs 50 and Red Bull at Rs125. I had seen the consumption of these drinks near the town but it was unexpected for me to see this in the rural side.
The next morning, I enquired with a shop owner of a bigger shop regarding the demand for energy drinks. He told me that his distributors claim that the demand for such energy drinks is higher in Sawai Madhopur as compared to demand in Jaipur or other bigger cities of Rajasthan. The beginning of this trend according to him was when Mohammad Azharuddin the former captain of the Indian national cricket team, contested the election from the Tonk-Sawai Madhopur constituency in 2014. He demanded Red Bull during his campaign and his whole stay in the region. To meet his demands Red Bull was brought from Kota. The people who campaigned with him continued to consume Red Bull after the election as well. Later the demand was boosted in the 2019 state and central elections as well. The energy drinks were in huge demand during the campaigning. The growth of Sting to become the fastest-growing beverage in India is also evidence of how the demand for energy drinks is growing in India.
Four years later, high school students can be seen consuming Predator and Red Bull even in the chilly mornings of Rajasthan. From what I have seen students and young people are consuming these energy drinks more than classic Coca-Cola or Pepsi. No matter what the future holds, energy drinks of all prices can increase in future, and can also influence the re-entry of Mukesh Ambani-backed Campa Cola. The following summer will shed light on the forerunner in the cold drinks and energy drinks race in India.
