Have Your Say 📣 Transport for NSW is proposing new policy to make it easier for Community Improvement Districts (CIDs) to be set up in NSW, and they want to hear your feedback! A Community Improvement District (CID) is a partnership between local government, community, and business. Within a CID, business, government, and the community all work together for a common goal of improving local spaces. CIDs can help enhance the local trading environment, encourage economic growth, and enable community pride. CIDs are one of the ways that the community and business can come together to improve local places. We are proposing new policy to make it easier for CIDs to be established where local businesses and the community think they would be useful. The draft Community Improvement Districts Bill 2023 sets out proposed legislation to establish CIDs in NSW and will be supported by regulations and related guidance. Transport for NSW is releasing the draft Bill for public comment so stakeholders can shape the final legislation, and they're keen to hear your views on the draft Bill and its objectives. To have your say and find out more about the CIDs bill, head to: https://lnkd.in/gA799Jtt #CIDs #CommunityImprovementDistricts #TransportforNSW #NSW #HaveYourSay #Feedback #Mainstreets

Are Evictions a Long-Lasting Solution to Urban challenges related to Informal Settlements? Informal settlements in Eastern Africa have been severely impacted by recent flooding caused by heavy rains. To prevent further losses associated with this disaster, the Government of Kenya has mandated the voluntary relocation or forced eviction of communities settled in riparian zones of rivers. This policy will result in the permanent relocation of over 127,000 vulnerable residents from informal settlements in Nairobi alone. Demolitions of houses have already begun. While we recognize the urgency of implementing measures to address the flooding, these evictions are not in line with the Vienna Declaration on Human Rights, particularly regarding forced evictions. Additionally, community initiatives aimed at preventing flooding, which could result in fewer evictions, are being overlooked. Civil Society Organizations, including our long-term partners, have drafted the attached solidarity statement to highlight these concerns. We would like to bring this statement to your attention. ✍ Beatrice Hati Gitundu Jan Fransen

Rural areas across the UK are often misunderstood by funders and policy makers as affluent places with no real deprivation or need, and that they are places that deserve little or significantly less investment. This stance overlooks the many hidden needs and inequities that exist in the countryside, leaving large swathes of the population disadvantaged simply because of where they live. More needs to be done to recognise and understand the intersectionality of the rural population and the marginalisation they face due to higher costs of living, lower wage employment opportunities and a lack of access to key services and connectivity. With many communities becoming more remote and facing a cycle of dormancy, exacerbated by business closures, service withdrawal and insufficient house building we believe that something needs to change. Plunkett UK advocates for the community ownership model as a way of addressing many of the challenges that currently exist in the countryside. To support this ambition however, we believe that there needs to be a comprehensive, cross-departmental rural strategy at the heart of Government. This is something we are pushing for along with other members of the Rural Coalition - [https://lnkd.in/e7kVbUMS]
📽️ “Many people think it's all about green and pleasant land when actually, in reality, there are many hidden needs that exist in rural areas.” Chris Cowcher, Plunkett UK’s Head of Policy and Communications, expresses our ask for the new Government to have a rural strategy, making sure that funding and support is in place to grow the rural community business network. #ruralcombiz
