First Alaskans Magazine, Winter 2023-2024 "United on Policy: Advocating for our Communities, Holding our Differences" Discussing the Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy (SASS) and the youth programs it supports, our Sustainable Southeast Partnership (SSP) Director, Marina Anderson, graces the cover of First Alaskans Magazine sharing the story of her, Katie Riley, and Tesla Cox trip to Washington DC. In April 2023, Tesla (Sealaska), Katie (Sitka Conservation Society), and Marina (Spruce Root) from SSP/ Spruce Root traveled roughly 3,500 miles to the US capitol with a thank you. While it is rare for federal legislators and agencies to receive in-person praise for a policy that’s already been enacted, these women leaders are not afraid to challenge norms– especially when they aren’t serving the communities they care deeply about. In the offices of Mary Pelota, Dan Sullivan, and Lisa Murkowski, they expressed gratitude, shared gifts, and advocated for their home region and communities. These women and their organizations represent a growing shift in the Tongass National Forest, moving away from polarization and fighting, toward collaboration and building common ground. This is the power of the SSP. Written by Shaelene Grace Moler, who is the current Spruce Root Community Economic Development Fellow through the Alaska Fellows Program and a past Sealaska SSP intern, this article features the photography/visual art of three other past Sitka Conservation Society and SSP interns: Lee House, Muriel Reid, and Sienna Reid. Groundwork is urging organisations to commit to an action plan designed to make them more inclusive and diverse in order to work towards a more inclusive environmental sector - to be a #ForceOfNature. For those of you who may not know, New to Nature aims to provide life-changing experiences for people who might not normally have access to a career in the environmental sector. Young people who are disabled, from an ethnic minority or who are from low-income homes were encouraged to apply for 95 roles in all areas of the nature sector in the last year. The year-long roles, funded with the help of National Lottery Heritage Fund, offered living wages, a range of training, and extra support to ensure that after the year, no one will be just left wondering what to do next. I can only say good things about this programme and when I think of the difference it has made for my life impacted across all 90 placements, I can only imagine how many lives have been irreversibly changed for the better. I could go on for a long time about the benefits but I will just say that if you'd like to learn more about Force of Nature and how your organisation could benefit, then go to: https://lnkd.in/eRViTccu
The #ForceOfNature Campaign by Groundwork is calling on the environmental sector this #GreenCareersWeek to create more accessible and inclusive pathways into work for young people from all backgrounds. James Webb, Partnerships and Fundraising Lead comments 'I’m very pleased and proud to be part of this campaign. For years we have offered opportunities for young people to learn new skills and undertake training with us but we wanted to take the next step and offer employment. With the help of New to Nature, we were able to do that'. And Nina Stubbington, Grants and Outreach Officer has been with us for over 6 months now! Nina explains 'This opportunity with Cotswolds National Landscape, through New to Nature, has allowed me to follow a career path that I thought would never be accessible for me.' Did you know that 17% of women leave employment completely in the five years following childbirth, compared to 4% of men? The Baker Hughes Back to Career Returnship Program recognizes women’s needs to take time off to raise families and cultivates a culture of respect and inclusivity by giving them the opportunity to re-enter the corporate world and gain exposure to new skillsets. I was inspired by my colleague Nadia Ayoub, part of our Climate Technology Solutions sales team and a member of the Baker Hughes Returnship Program. When asked about the program, Nadia remarked: ‘We need to build inclusive ecosystems that enable women to advance and realize their full potential whilst allowing them to take time off for motherhood and family needs when required.’ I truly believe that when organizations invest in women, they build stronger institutions, economies, and communities. By addressing biases, fostering inclusive workplaces, advocating for equal opportunities, and nurturing a culture of empowerment, companies like Baker Hughes are energizing change and making a difference. If you are considering returning to a career in the #Energy sector, explore the exciting roles at Baker Hughes here: https://lnkd.in/gffthqrW #WeAreBakerHughes #GreatWorkplace #Equality #Innovation #ShapingTheFuture #EnergyLeadership #Hiring #Career #DEI #BakerHughes
