PRACTICE MONSOON SAFETY (VIDEO) - With the monsoon in full swing, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility's (DTM) Operation Splash campaign continues to protect the traveling public during storms. Monsoon storms can bring heavy flooding, road closures, and power outages. If you encounter a closed road, do not drive around the barricade, as just 12 inches of water can carry away most vehicles. If traffic lights are out, treat the intersection as a four-way-stop if an officer is not present, and ensure you come to a complete stop before entering the roadway. DTM Street Maintenance is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through mid-September, closing roadways at dip crossings and washes using the more than 500 barricades placed on the side of the roadways. DTM also helps residents concerned with flooding by offering free sandbags in the east parking lot of Hi Corbett Field, 700 S. Randolph Way, at Reid Park. Sand and sandbags are provided by DTM staff, but residents should bring their own shovels. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle. ARTS FOUNDATION FOR TUCSON AND SOUTHERN ARIZONA INVESTS MILLIONS IN ARTS AND CULTURE IN OUR REGION - Over the past four fiscal years, from July 2020 through June 2024, the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona distributed more than $3.2 million to 672 artists and arts organizations via 16 diverse grant programs. The funding was made possible with local, regional, and federal funding, notably through the City of Tucson’s Somos Uno Cares Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts, with support from Pima County, Arizona Commission on the Arts, private partnerships, and hundreds of donors. The timeliness of the coordinated response was instrumental in job creation and retention in the arts sector. TUCSON CELEBRATES FEDERAL BUS GRANT - Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and other City officials attended an event this morning, July 10, to celebrate a recent $11.38 million bus grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). FTA Region 9 Administrator Ray Tellis was also on hand to discuss the planned work, made possible with funding from the Biden administration's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the work of Arizona's congressional delegation. “The City of Tucson is thrilled to have earned this $11.3 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to replace aging bus lifts, install 80 bus shelters, and update signs and add accessibility elements at more than 500 bus stops throughout our community," Romero said. ART AND WELLNESS FIESTA LATER THIS MONTH - The nationwide "One Nation One Project" celebration of arts and wellness is Saturday, July 27, and the Borderlands Theater is taking part in the festivities. The Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200 W. Speedway Blvd., will feature a concert sharing of "Anita," a new musical by Borderlands about the power of joy to create a sense of home and belonging. The musical will be held from 6-8 p.m. A post-show fiesta will be held in the courtyard of the Berger Center with live music, heritage food booths, art exhibits, and interactive activities promoting the connection between arts participation and personal and collective well-being. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero will announce the winners of the "Art is Vital" art contest. CITY OF TUCSON'S 27TH ANNUAL 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS CELEBRATION - The City of Tucson this week will be presenting the 27th Annual 4th of July Fireworks Celebration, thanks to the sponsorship of Desert Diamond Casino and Entertainment Group, an enterprise of the Tohono O'odham Nation. The fireworks will be launched from "A" Mountain/Sentinel Peak Park beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 4, weather permitting. TUCSON POLICE ASSISTANT CHIEF KEVIN HALL RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR - The George Mason University Center of Evidence-Based Crime Policy recently inducted Tucson Police Department (TPD) Assistant Chief Kevin Hall into the Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame. With 32 years of experience at TPD, Hall has spearheaded numerous research-based initiatives that have reduced crime and improved community safety. He's also the leader of a new TPD bureau dedicated to data-driven, evidence-based strategies across the organization, encompassing violent crime reduction, alternative staffing and response models, traffic safety planning, and internal assessments.
