Strong public health policies – including those to reduce tobacco use – work to increase life expectancy and improve other health outcomes. The Washington Post took an in-depth look at three bordering counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Those with higher tobacco taxes and greater investment in prevention and cessation programs saw greater progress in reducing smoking-related death and disease. The federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) ended earlier this year. While many people may face relatively low risk, experts maintain COVID-19 is not gone and remains a concern for older people and individuals with limited immune systems.
