Perhaps I'm just ignorant, but what and where and when is Diversity Equality and Inclusion relevant? Let's start with admittance and grades for QC courses. In my day those who scored the required SAT scores and had the required average in Highschool were accepted into QC. There was no discrimination. Just numbers. Everyone else could go to QCC and matriculate into QC for their Junior year. Diversity irrelevant. Equality, everyone got an equal opportunity, Inclusion standards were color blind and ethnic neutral. Now lets look at Main St. Flushing 1970 compared to today. Back then Diversity in all races and religions. Equality was go into a store with money and you got what you wanted. Inclusion All were welcome. Today's Main St. Flushing. 100% Asian language. 100% Asian business owned. What happened to Diversity? What's concerning is when the people in charge program AI. The one source of programming will end the 1st amendment. Then obviously old uninformed people like me will just have to accept the infallible explanations. Oh well. I guess the truth checkers will make it all right.
Spring is a busy time at QC! In the April issue of President Frank Wu's newsletter "Frankly Speaking," read about upcoming campus events, including Diversity Week (April 15-19) and Become a Knight Day, a celebration for accepted Fall '24 students! Read the full issue: https://conta.cc/3TZmpjd.

Happy Juneteenth! The correlation between Race and Income is very real in America. Blacks are disproportionately impacted by poverty. Yet few other holidays remind us as much of the shared black history, struggle and resilience and of the common thread that runs through the Black experience in America. Being black, in and of itself, is a barrier to achievement, regardless of income and national origin. Conscious and unconscious bias, systemic and individual racism are still alive and well! The data and the outcomes in every sector: from healthcare outcomes, to educational outcomes, to incarceration outcomes to wealth generation outcomes, to housing outcomes etc... suggest we are far from a post-racial America! Grateful for the progress! And there is still so much work ahead! Today I lift up Project Onramp which lifts up low income students so that they too can transcend poverty and when they do they can become advocates for the struggle they come from and are forever part of!

PhD Student (University of Cambridge) working in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration | Founder of the Black Women in Science Network
Read more about Medical Research Council's BBRAG in this article where Dr. Bernadine Idowu-Onibokun PhD, PFHEA, MRSB and I talk about our experiences as Black scientists and how we hope we can make a change
“We think visibility is a primary factor that contributes towards the underrepresentation of Black scientists across the biomedical sciences. Going back as far as in secondary school, we didn’t see people who represented us in these fields, sometimes even within our own families… ...It’s exciting to make a difference and know that in generations to come, the impact that we've had in our communities will still stand. Even if it’s just one Black researcher that stays in the game, it could change a person's life. The impact that research has on healthcare and people's lives is exponential. By ensuring a diverse input, the output is going to help diverse communities. We have so much hope for this project and the future as it’s giving us the space to do what we want to do.” In our new blog, Dr. Bernadine Idowu-Onibokun PhD, PFHEA, MRSB and Tomi Akingbade, members of the Black in Biomedical Research Advisory Group (BBRAG), share how they’re helping to create visibility for Black biomedical researchers. The Black in Biomedical Research project aims to overcome the challenges of underrepresentation of researchers from Black heritage backgrounds across the biomedical sciences. Through the guidance and influence of the BBRAG, the project will support activities including outreach to Black students at both secondary school and university level, paid summer internships, networking, and early-career researcher support. Check out two new blog posts for American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) from Association of Indiana Museums board member Bethany Hrachovec which came from the joint Association of Midwest Museums-AIM Conference in July 2023. If you missed the session at the conference, you can catch the highlights in the blogs!
I was fortunate to present with Anne Jordan and Jeannie Regan-Dinius at the Association of Midwest Museums conference this past July about Reaching and Supporting the Next Generation of museum workers. As part of my work on the AASLH Educator and Interpreter committee, the session evolved into a 2-part blog on what we discussed and the key takeaways for attendees of the session. You can read both blogs here: https://lnkd.in/g6TT2ZeX and https://lnkd.in/gfSxDpBK
