Dear Dara N. Byrne, Ann Kirschner, Felix Matos Rodriguez I am sharing these alum letters publicly with you. As an alum of both Hunter College and Macaulay Honors College, I am deeply disappointed and appalled by the response, or rather the lack thereof, to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. A collective of alumni collaborated to compose these two letters addressed to the CUNY administration. We feel a profound sense of shame for having been associated with institutions that seem to lack the moral compass to stand on the right side of history. The suppression of academia and activism related to Palestine on campuses must stop. The investment in corporations that support the Israeli occupation must stop. The unwarranted surveillance of Black and Brown students on campus must stop. We reject the role of being mere token diverse students and alumni. It is disheartening to witness the silence and the propagation of harmful rhetoric against students, setting a dangerous precedent for Muslim/Arab students across the United States. While you will find alumni who have already signed these letters, it's important to note that due to concerns about doxing, some alumni are unable to sign their names publicly. So, although you may see signatures on these letters, there are dozens more who support this message but cannot openly declare their support. This fact underscores the gravity of our safety concerns at this time. To Felix Matos Rodriguez specifically, we see you ignoring our pleas. Faculty, students and staff have been urging you to stand on the right side of history, and you are posting one-sided statements that fuel hateful rhetoric to your own student and faculty body. Make no mistake, we will not forget this as alumni, staff, and students. https://lnkd.in/etJg9QQ9 tinyurl.com/macaulayletter

LIANZA stands beside our Australian colleagues, the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), expressing our dismay at the members of Cumberland City Council who voted last week to ban books about same-sex parenting in their libraries. Worldwide standards for public libraries state that “True freedom to read means being able to choose from the broadest range of books sharing the widest range of ideas. Unrestrained communication is essential to a free society and a creative culture but carries with it the responsibility to resist hate speech, deliberate falsehoods and distortion of facts.” New Zealand’s library association, LIANZA, like ALIA is committed to libraries providing access to information for all. People should be free to decide what books they borrow from their public library. People should also be able to find stories that represent their culture, their families and their identities. Freedom of choice and access to information and stories that represent them is a fundamental pillar of democracy. https://ow.ly/YFho50RCVoR

Thanks to the authors for entrusting me with your work, to Alessandra for being a true partner, and to the American Society for the History of Rhetoric for giving us the space! If you get paywalled out of any of the essays, let me know, and I'll share. #TeamRhetoric https://lnkd.in/ger6dTzf
