🏫: Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares students for postsecondary life, allowing them to pursue their interests and match their skills to careers. Special education students, however, have not always had the same opportunity to engage with CTE as their peers. Kentucky Department of Education (KDE)’s Office of Special Education and Early Learning (OSEEL) leaders have focused on expanding special education teachers’ CTE knowledge to increase accessibility. “We need CTE teachers and special education teachers working together, learning together, growing together, doing professional developments together.” Read more from #KentuckyTeacher: https://lnkd.in/ghDfxihX

Caldicott is proud to announce an update to our boarding offering. Building on our legacy as a premium boarding prep school, yet mindful of an evolving educational landscape, we will soon be embarking on a new phase in our rich history. From September 2024 it will no longer be compulsory for boys to board as they move into the senior school (Year 7), and instead we will be offering a range of Day Plus, weekly and full boarding options. Currently, most boys in Years 3-6 are day boys, with an expectation for boys to transition to boarding from eleven years of age. In fast-changing times, Caldicott exemplifies how to answer the evolving needs of pupils without losing sight of the core strengths that gives us our dynamic spirit. This change is a natural progression of the current boarding model and a reflection of our responsiveness to the evolving parent body and the expectations of top tier senior schools. Not all boys are ready to board at the same time. Through our academic lens, we pride ourselves at looking at each boy’s individual needs and we now want to take this same approach with our boarding. At Caldicott, we are laser-focused on delivering an ideal all-round learning experience that prepares boys for their continued educational development at a senior level. We know how best to teach boys and understand the true essence of a prep education. Crucially, we do this in the context of the modern world, ensuring boys are guided on a pathway to becoming successful and emotionally intelligent young men. As we prepare to go back to school ~ I want to share what pre-k teachers said they needed to be successful and intentional in setting up their spaces to serve young children ~ (1) more support in having a reasonable budget to prepare and upkeep their classrooms throughout the school year (2) more space or innovative ideas about how to use space well in the classrooms (3) adequate TIME to set up for the school year (not just 1 day) ~ and adequate PAID time weekly to modify environments. So, directors, administrators, leaders- let’s support teachers in AUTHENTIC ways. Collaborate with teachers and come up with a list of furniture and materials needed for the classroom & FUND classroom needs (add in wants if you can) - Help creatively and intentionally use the space children need in every classroom by hiring an environment specialist/consultant - PAY teachers to have TIME to set up and clean up each day and each week so kids can thrive (working on the classroom environments shouldn’t be an unpaid weekend activity for teachers). #prek #budget #space #time https://rdcu.be/dgfZP

K-12 Education is changing. It will have to change in order to serve the students and teachers post-Covid. In the United States, we are contending with a collision between justice-oriented Federal and State laws, and lack of resources from funding to people. Is it time to change the model of how we approach education? What if we focus on Special Education? Even more specifically, Special Ed for Transition-aged (14-21) youth? Educational programs vary across the country, but many professionals in this field feel we are not able to meet the needs of these wonderful humans we work with, because teaching has become a near-impossible job with more demands than are possible to fill in a week. I’ve seen a lot of negative press about #homeschooling lately, mostly centered on how “unaccountable” we are. There’s a strong vibe of frustration over officials not knowing whether we’re actually educating our children. On the face of it, I will say that if you’re uncomfortable not knowing what we are teaching our children, we actually don’t care, and your discomfort means nothing. The state has no legal right to scrutinize what education happens in our homes, unless you live in a state like Rhode Island that makes it ridiculously difficult to #homeschool. As a mother who lives in a school district that absolutely sucks by anyone’s standards - you remember that national news story about the first day of school where buses got the last kids home at 9:40 soaked in urine and had to cancel the next several days of school? - it infuriates me when people who will defend JCPS at any cost will groan and lament over not knowing what the county’s thousands of homeschoolers are doing. They seriously act like we are trying to produce uneducated bigots who will fail at life. You can understand my frustration over the right obsessing over the content of a few school library books and some flags, and the left obsessing over SEL and breathing exercises and preventing school choice, when at the school down the road, half of the fifth graders are illiterate. I will continue to answer invasive questions in this way- until there is abuse, the state has no standing. Punto y final. Period, the end. But I’m always willing to shine a light on honest inquiry about homeschooling. I was homeschooled from 5th through 12th grades, mostly without the benefit of the internet. All three of our children have been homeschooled at some point, and the two oldest are currently. Our oldest daughter has been homeschooled for all but fifth grade, which she spent in JCPS’s dual immersion school. This fall, as a 14-year-old high school sophomore, she took the PSAT. What is a “campus”? Yesterday, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced a proposed new rule regarding the school safety allotment provided to school districts under Section 48.115 of the Texas Education Code. The amount of the allotment is based in part on the number of campuses a school district has, and the proposed rule provides a definition of what constitutes a “campus”. School districts use the safety allotment to pay for things like (portions of) Texas House Bill 3’s requirement that armed security personnel be present at “each campus”. In my discussions with district leaders around the state about HB-3’s requirements, a recurring question has been, what qualifies as a “campus” for purposes of HB-3. Is an employee child care faciltity a campus? A handful of district classrooms housed in a local community college or leased building? An outdoor learning center where students are not always present? A football stadium? A hospital where students are participating in clinical observations as part of a district or dual credit class? The new rule proposed by the TEA (19 TAC 61.1008) provides a definition of “campus” for purposes of determining a district’s safety allotment. However, it would be reasonable to also use this definition as guidance for determining what constitutes a campus requiring the presence of armed security personnel under HB-3. The public comment period for the new rule ends December 4, 2023.
