Here’s another familiar face! Today we are spotlighting Harriet Simand as part of #VolunteerAppreciationWeek! Harriet is a retired teacher who loves gardening, travelling and dogs.   1. How long have you volunteered with Evergreen?    This is my third year as a tour guide! 2. What inspired you to volunteer with Evergreen?    I love the site, the nature and the historic buildings. I love feeling like I am in nature even though I am in the middle of the city.   3. Tell us about your roles and impact as a volunteer.     I am a tour guide for public and private tours. I also volunteer for different festivals and the craft club. I love meeting the public and sharing the unique history of Evergreen Brick Works with them. I have been coming here for years and had no idea about its history!   4. What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Evergreen Brick Works?   I love interacting with the public, especially kids, and spending time with my fellow tour guides who are so much fun to hang out with.   5. What’s the most important thing that you’ve learned from volunteering?    Interacting with people in nature makes everyone happy. 6. Why do you think access to green public space is important? We live in a big city with lots of buildings and concrete. We often overlook the ravines and the plants and animals who live there. You can feel part of nature even if you live in a big city.

Look for events in your area, check your local council, 'friends of' groups, local events pages. Facebook is a great place to find these. Offer your help, it's rewarding in many ways. 👉 Can't find an event near you? Create one! Get a group of collegues together for an hour out of the office, tackle that area that needs some love 💚 #lovewhereyouwork Make some time at the weekend and involve your family. Teach your children to #lovewhereyoulive Litterpicking equipment is normally supplied by groups but if not, invest in some gear, make it a regular thing. Adopt a street perhaps. TOMORROW MORNING (SATURDAY APRIL 20TH) at 10:30 AM our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Albuquerque will be having our next Community Clean-Up (ABQ)! For this Community Clean-Up our volunteers will meet up at, and clean the neighborhood around Mesa Verde Community Center located at 7900 Marquette NE Albuquerque NM 87108 NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. Volunteering as a means to help conserve and protect the environment has a lot of upsides. Of course, the first is that you’ll be taking care of our planet, and it badly needs a little love given the myriad ways in which we’ve become adept at destroying it. But beyond that, volunteering for a cause you care about is a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends, and pull yourself out of the blues that sometimes accompany caring a lot about something important – especially if you feel alone in your endeavors. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city.
