Each site will have its own architectural value, which means you have two totally different experiences based on the physical location of the new stadium. No new stadium ever meets all of the stated architectural goals. It might be facing the wrong way compared to a certain part of the city, it might be too tall, or it may emit too much light. In our exploration of stadium and arena innovation, we take a look further afield to Canada and the Rogers Centre, a multi-purpose retractable roof stadium in Toronto. It is one of the first stadiums to have a fully retractable, motorised roof and boasts a 348-room hotel, with 70 rooms overlooking the field. Although primarily a sports venue, it also accommodates various other large events, including conventions, trade fairs, concerts, traveling carnivals, circuses, and monster truck shows. Opened in 1989 and originally called the SkyDome, this engineering marvel has stood the test of time. One of the main driving forces for building a stadium with a domed, retractable roof was the ability to protect fans and athletes alike from the sometimes harsh Toronto weather. The roof can be open to clear skies at the outset of a game but can be closed in just 20 minutes should the need arise. Set for a major renovation at the end of the 2023 Major League Baseball season, the Rogers Centre is a great example of how innovation in technology can be incorporated into venue design with enduring success, and be adapted over time as needs change and new tech emerges. I would love to work on a project like this. The use of 3D twins for municipal planning is still in its infancy. The ability to visualize developments over time and have layers of contextual data (utility mapping, zoning, political jurisdications) make tools such as this valuable to remarkable range of stakeholders. It should be noted that the exercise of visualization is in of itself valuable as a way to discover and organize all of that composite information. As an aggregation project there is a lot of commonalities and discrepencieis that can be found and addressed.
