Sitting at the IFPO evening for industry association people hosted by IFSEC at Blackfriars Road, London. At the risk of sounding like a complete provincial, I have tried coffee with oat milk, to be daringly metropolitan, and it's delicious. Adding to my good mood, everything at this event sounds interesting. After Michelle Russell of the SIA spoke, including about the Authority's proposed change to the 17-year-old approved contractor scheme (I did a page on it, in the November print edition of Professional Security Magazine), it was uncanny that the next speaker was from a tech platform called Earnflex. They provide labour including security officers to facilities management companies such as Sodexo. As for the guarding contractors in the room, they may have asked themselves, might platforms or indeed buyers of guarding take the view, why not cut out the contractor as the middle man? Earnflex's answer, the likes of G4S and Wilson James know best. "We are here to supply the technology, the labour to them." The question, how to make ACS relevant given all the sub-contracting going on (Earnflex say that if a customer asks for staff where they haven't anyone, they say so, in other words, Earnflex don't sub further.)

Going over #BLS data a bit today. The picture below is a bit crude, but I like how it shows the remarkably fast #employment recovery for the #accommodation and #food services industry. Month-over-month, the sector gained just over 31,000 jobs, and has recovered over 270,000 #jobs year-over-year.

There has been a five-fold increase in unprofitability in BC’s hospitality sector compared to pre-COVID. More than 50% of foodservice and hospitality businesses are currently unprofitable. From supply management price increases and skyrocketing transportation costs, to rent and property tax increases, restaurants are struggling to make ends meet. But, with fair policy adjustments, such as sensible changes to the employer health tax and small business taxes, and keeping licensing and permitting costs sustainable, we know that governments can take steps to help. Did you know that our ESS software recently got an upgrade? Not only does it do everything an accreditation system is supposed to do (and more), it also has an advanced F&B module that allows you to monitor and allocate staff and supplier meals. This way you can easily plan ahead, budget, and ensure that the meal distribution is both fair and efficient. Because having to manually handle daily meals for hundreds if not thousands of people is a recipe for disaster, evoking chaos and stress.

After several conversations this week, just a note to hospitality EPOS solutions - tracking tips in the system does not necessarily mean your restaurants are 100% compliant! Yes, it assists with some of the admin load restaurants have to go through when deciphering what's revenue and what's tips, however, on it's own it doesn't meet the other 3 main points of the code of practice and it doesn't arrest avoidable costs. If you're unsure on the 4 mains points of the code of practice, feel free to get in touch. Reminder, 1st of July the legislation comes in! If Ireland is anything to go by, 6-9 months after that we'll start to see fines issued to non-compliant restaurants in the UK.
