How do you get the City Council to buy into your pavement preservation plan? Money is tight for almost everyone in Public Works. There are more projects to do than you'll ever have budget to get done. How can you get the City Council to agree to give you more money for your road projects? To steal one of my client's sayings, "People will support what they understand." When this Public Works Director approached his City Council to approve more budget for their pavement preservation program, he spent a significant amount of time outlining his vision for the program, creating financial projections, and just generally creating a presentation that would help his council understand what he was trying to accomplish and why. In this case, the prep paid off. Once The Council understood what he wanted to accomplish and why it was beneficial, he was granted a larger budget for preservation projects. Now, a million different things can factor into whether or not your budget request is approved. But helping the decision makers understand the "why" behind the request is a step towards getting what you're asking for, especially with a city's many competing priorities.

ICYMI, Greenville City Council unanimously adopted the FY24/25 budget as provided to us for consideration by our City Manager. Highlighting some of the many areas that are funded based on Priorities set by City Council: -Increased funding to support Affordable and Workforce housing initiatives, $10.3M -Increased funding for Greenlink Transit to help expand select routes to provide 30-minute service, $12.3M -Increased investment in Public Safety facilities and equipment, $8.9M -Increased investment in neighborhoods through our Neighborhood Infrastructure Bond (II)and NStep Sidewalk program, $19M These are examples of the investments we are making to positively impact the quality of life for ALL Greenvillians. ALL this provided WITHOUT a millage (tax) increase for our property owners!

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗦: 🔷 Fast track the planning system for new homes on previously developed land in the 20 largest cities. 𝗟𝗜𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗦: 🟡 A new planning class for second homes and short term lets. 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗬: 🟩 Changing building regulations so all new homes meet ‘Passivhaus’ standards, a gold standard in energy efficiency. 🟩 A minimum EPC standard of C rating. Both the 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘀 and the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆 have emphasised the importance of large scale developments needing to be supported by new infrastructure. What is evident from all the parties is the acknowledgement of a housing crisis and therefore whoever you vote for, new houses will be built.
