Interesting jobs that no longer exist: Switchboard Operator In the early to mid-20th century, if you wanted to get in touch with someone on the phone, a switchboard operator was the person to help you do it. Switchboard operators were essential whenever you wanted to make a call, connecting one caller through the central office to the party they were trying to reach via a network of manual plugs. While this profession may seem antiquated, switchboard operators were actually in use well into the 1960s. #DYK #TB #Throwback #jobs #heirloomcloud

CenterPoint Energy clearly needs new management for Corporate Comms. Where do I send my resume? At 3:37pm—about 3 hours after power went out—they issued a text letting customers knows power was expected to be restored by 5:15pm. It is now 9:20pm. MORE than 4 hours past their own self-imposed deadline. No power. More importantly, though, ZERO COMMUNICATION. I can understand that the power is out. It was a massive storm. Things happen. Even the best estimates turn out to be wrong once you dig in and start troubleshooting. I am annoyed power isn’t back on. But I am PISSED that there has been zero communication and no updated ETA. We are both literally and figuratively being kept in the dark because Centerpoint can’t be bothered to communicate. There is simply no excuse. #badcommunication #badcustomerservice #hownottodoit #corporatecomms #poweroutage

In BTTF, Biff meant to say "Make like a tree and leaf!" No.. Shut up Biff! Be like a tree and grow. I was thinking about how I started my career .. pretty much from the bottom of corporate roles - Helpdesk. Good ol helpdesk… earning minimum wage of $30k/pa, helping customers troubleshoot their Netgear routers and switches. A humbling experience. But that experience was the start of many great experiences I've had since. In that first role alone I learnt things such as: - customer service, - SLAs, - how call centres worked, with follow the sun customer support etc, - learnt actual technical skills with configuring routers/switches for local LAN networks There are still instances to this day, I reflect on something that I experienced or learnt in that first job. I was in that role for about 9 months before going into the next one… This time into a slightly different helpdesk role but revolving around doing 24/7 shifts. - A real eye-opener - or rather quite difficult trying to keep eyes open during night-shifts =P These two roles combined helped me land my proper role that was somewhat relevant to what I wanted to do when I did my telecom degree.. A NOC support role And so I kept going.. Ultimately landing a BA role and enjoying the exposure and experience gained thus far. Doesn't matter how far along you are in your career journey, most of us start small and grow with time. Small seedlings become small plants and then eventually grow into trees. Nurturing is important, watering the plant for growth and moving from small punnets, to trays to pots to getting planted into the ground. Short-term weather events come and go as do longer term seasons. Both have their ups and downs.. But if you are well planted, have the right amount of nutrients available, getting the right amount water and sunshine, you will continue to grow. So, be like a tree.

As annoying as I find AI-powered IVRs (interactive voice response) call centers in my personal life, there's potential here for public health. I'm sure many infectious disease response folks have set up call centers for monitoring, contact tracing, and managing specimen collection for public health labs when commercial testing isn't yet available. Of course, we'll have to do a lot more to think through risks associated with UI/UX (e.g., wouldn't want to frustrate callers during emergencies) and for bias in voice/speech recognition.

For cities that have both 311 and 911, this seems like a winner! There are a ton of vacancies nationwide for PSAPs and this could alleviate the staffing challenges while creating some efficiency improvements.
