NEW from Voices! 💬 💬 "Reclaiming MLK Day of Service: From Perpetuating Harm to Honoring the Legacy" "We do it because we are supposed to." "We get the most volunteers this day, but they never come back." "I get anxious about navigating this day." "It's clear the legacy doesn't matter anymore." These are real sentiments about MLK Day of Service and the feelings provoked by corporate group leaders, volunteer engagers and community members. Over time, the legacy is reduced to quick-fix volunteer offerings, t-shirts and awards, white savior practices, and high-fives of temporary accomplishments without sustainability and community voice. How can we shift this day of service to honor and not harm? In this Voices, Breauna Dorelus, MPA shares her thoughts on the day, what it means for the day's legacy to spark co-dreaming, and her partnership with United Way of King County as they reimagined their MLK Day approach. https://lnkd.in/gSvsp8Rk * this article is for Engage members, low cost monthly memberships are available.

At Forward Ability Support we are always looking at how we can improve outcomes for those that we support including supporting research into SCI and the associated conditions.
Recently a member of our team Keith McNaughton met residents, staff and clinicians at Ferguson Lodge, run by Forward Ability Support It was a great opportunity to meet everyone, give an update on our current trials and studies, and to invite everyone to participate in exciting research. Thanks to Sharis Matevossian Doumit (Community Engagement Manager) and Sarah (Director of Home and Living Supports) for hosting the morning and particularly the residents for meeting with us.

Vice President of Career Services @ Licking/Knox Goodwill | Media/Communications Director @ Ohio District PCG | MBA, Non-Profit Management
So excited for this next step for Licking County! Today myself and others from the Licking County Reentry Coalition Steering Committee completed our training to begin hosting a Citizen Circle monthly for Licking County. 🙌🙌🙌 Taken directly from ODRC: “Citizen Circles create partnerships that promote positive interactions, social support, and accountability for justice-involved individuals. Together, justice-involved individuals and Citizen Circle members embark on a journey of transformation to create fundamental changes in people, relationships, and communities. Citizen Circles provide a holistic and collective approach to individuals at any stage of their reentry. Many need assistance immediately upon release; however, at times others who have been released for a period of time may need specific assistance from the Circle, such as obtaining employment. Goals of Citizen Circles include: Reintegration: To support individuals with a seamless transition back to Ohio communities. Community Partnerships: Community members take an active role in developing partnerships to assist individuals. Accountability: Justice-involved individual’s responsibility and commitment to positive change.”

"Capital B Atlanta spoke with three Black Atlantans who are imagining what public safety and justice look like outside the existing system by mediating restorative conferences, community building, and educating others. They spoke about their work, why they believe it is beneficial for Black people, and why they focus their efforts outside the existing system as opposed to attempting to reform it."
