I still remember my 1st time running an expo show with my partner and co-founder, Sean. That was back in 2012, and we naively took up 2 booths, without prior knowledge, experience or even the awareness of how much work it was to run a 4-day event from morning to night. We did it, just the 2 of us, and I remember set up day took us all the way to about 1am. We had a little cash box for all cash payments and the entire booth's decor was done by us, with dollhouses, plush toys, floral pots and photo frames from our home. There were no leading up advertisements or shoutouts to our event. Thinking back, were we just expecting organic traffic to get our sales? LOL. But you know what? With zero spent in marketing, and only RM20,000 spent on booth rental set up cost, we had RM50,000 in gross sales during those 4 days, with a 90% gross margin. Yes, those were the days when the discount culture on ecommerce was not as prevalent. With only RM50,000 in gross sales, we actually had a huge net margin of RM25,000 in just 4 days. Not bad eh, considering there was zero marketing spend. It has been 11 years since that day. Today, it is no longer just the 2 of us handling our events. We are truly blessed to have an amazing team who helps run all our Applecrumby® events seamlessly. Seeing the booth today in exactly the same spot it stood 11 years ago, it is surreal the journey we have been through, one that we never thought would lead to where we are today, through all its bumpy ups and downs. Would we do it all over again? With how we are, we probably would have. Sean and I generally do not overanalyse things and we execute to keep things going. Sometimes we fall, but even our darkest times failed to knock us over completely. So yeah, with no crystal ball in hand, we would do it all over again.

What is one of the hottest attention-grabbing items right now? For better or worse, it’s the Cybertruck. When people see one on the road, they snap a photo. 📸 When the truck is in the local mall’s store, people stand in line to snap a selfie. 🤳 As you build out your 2024 demand generation strategy, how are you harnessing interest in adjacent categories to raise awareness of your company, your brand, and your product? Imagine if your exhibit space offered visitors the opportunity to snap a photo with the Cybertruck, or capture a selfie from behind the wheel? What would the Cybertruck look like in a custom wrap designed with your brand’s color scheme? 🤩 Does your events team know what’s needed to secure a truck, design and install the wrap, and coordinate venue logistics to permit the vehicle in the exhibit space? Tactics and planning around ideas like this are where I’d be focusing my team’s resources and efforts in 2024 to be sure our brand and product stands out and generates buzz and attention for our products.
