Welcome to Summer in Raleigh ☀️ Check out our latest Live with Liz cityscape chat: all thanks to Highwoods Properties for the wonderful rooftop view! Today our general manager, Liz Miller met with Police Chief Patterson of the Raleigh Police Department & Brenda Gibson with the Raleigh Police Department Foundation. Chief Patterson discussed how she & the Raleigh Police Department are excited and looking forward to serving the community this summer. If you see an officer and need assistance, don’t forget to ask! Brenda Gibson discussed with us how the Raleigh Police Foundation works to help provide innovation, technology, training, and community outreach for the RPD team. The organization has raised about $4.3 million to support their cause, including the introduction of the ConnectRaleigh camera system. We hope your summer is safe & fun! ☀️ #summer #cityclubraleigh #community

We have been hired as a consultant by RootED Denver (a nonprofit organization supporting great schools in Denver) to gauge community interest in our concept within DPS communities. Over the next two months, we will be contacting and meeting with schools, community-based nonprofits, neighborhood groups, and neighborhood organizations to get their feedback on the following questions: From your perspective, is declining enrollment due to population shifts a problem? What is the degree/extent of the problem? What is the shared understanding of the problem? How should the problem be approached (our model incentivizes districts to participate as partners, lifts community desires, finds compromises through information and neutral facilitation, builds cross-sector coalitions, and funnels resources into communities from foundations through community nonprofits)? What would be an adequate timeline for community-led work in resolving the problem (in the presentation, we use a hypothetical timeline of two years)? Thank you, Ambar Suero and Patrick Donovan for all of your support!

It's official! The Trust for Civic Life has launched! An exciting day for folks building civic infrastructure, particularly in rural communities. From Hollie Russon Gilman, Ph.D.: The Trust is a new philanthropic collaborative and learning network with a simple mission: support local efforts that bring residents together to solve challenges they decide are most critical for their community to thrive. In times of polarization, we believe this is one critical step in the process of rebuilding trust in each other and forging a deeper democracy. https://lnkd.in/gQwUbPPH #democracy

Did you know that Black people in England & Wales are THREE times more likely to live in social housing (Census 2021)? Black South West Network's 2020 Housing research also identifies that Black and Minority households also experience difficulties in getting issues surrounding housing conditions addressed due to numerous factors such as language barriers, racial prejudice, and economic barriers. As part of our practical community work, BSWN paired up with Bristol City Council and numerous other Bristol-based charities to provide Black and Minoritised communities direct access to City Council housing officers. In providing culturally-sensitive, safe spaces for these issues to be addressed, we hope to help alleviate the ongoing housing disparities experienced by racialised folk. We've already had two sessions this year (Barton Hill and Fishponds), providing assistance to well over 20 social housing tenants in matters like HomeChoice, Repairs & Maintenance, and ASB! We have two upcoming sessions: in August (Southmead) and October (Easton/Eastville). If you know any community members that might benefit, pass them along this link: https://lnkd.in/gzgm4fn8

Thanks for having me Shoutout Miami! I love this part specifically about what they're doing: "We think meaningful conversations are at the heart of community building. We also think every voice matters and that these conversations shouldn’t be led by billionaires, media elites, or celebrities. We feel it’s far more relevant to hear from the folks who make up the fabric of our communities – small business owners, mom-and-pops, and independent artists and creatives." This is a great example of a venture designed to be a part of helping people see, know and hear each other. It can be a bridge that links together cities, communities, businesses, nonprofits, neighborhoods, and people. Do you see this happening in your circles and if so, where and how? https://lnkd.in/eSxZsJV6

This story has really captured the hearts & minds of people near & far. A beautifully simple story in so many respects, but also an embodiment of what community regeneration means: connection, revival, action & hope. https://lnkd.in/exnn6ubk

And here's Part II: Now, I can help my neighbors and my city the most by serving in city government. I again feel called by a higher power to step up. To bring all I have to bear, including my: - knowledge of local government, - entrepreneurial & collaborative attitude, - ability to get things done, - love of people, - wide-ranging relationships in the community, - commitment to ethics, - progressive ideas for change, and - desire to serve others. How will this campaign unfold, you ask? - I’m legally allowed to start receiving donations on August 8, 2023. - The primary election will be on March 5, 2024. - If no candidate gets more than 50%, there will be a general election on November 5, 2024. - The winner starts this full-time job in January 2025. During the campaign, I’ll continue working for Catalyze SV. However, I'm handing off my San Jose duties to my colleagues in the spirit of ethical nonprofit governance. The main theme that has grounded my work for years will also be the center of this campaign: Building Community. Together, we'll build a community in which we can all: - afford housing - feel welcome and safe - prosper - experience a healthy environment - get around easily - live close to shops, jobs, & green space - feel in San Jose a sense of joy, history & civic pride - receive quality city services - be heard by our city government and understand how we can impact its decisions To accomplish these things, I will focus on 6 priorities once elected: 1. Reducing the Cost of Housing & the Extent of Homelessness 2. Safer Streets & Smarter Approaches to Public Safety 3. Growing, Celebrating, & Conserving: Improving District 6 Neighborhoods & San Jose 4. A City for All of Us Means More Shared Prosperity 5. An Accessible, Responsive, Transparent City Government 6. A Well-Run District 6 Office Working for You I pledge to run a campaign of integrity rooted in the issues. In the weeks ahead, I’m eager to talk more about my ideas for San Jose and hear more of yours too! I'm gonna need your support in my City Council campaign. Call me at (408) 883-0863 or email me at [email protected] to discuss my candidacy and how you can help. Or visit alexshoor.com to sign up to learn more. And if you're in town, register for our Meet the Candidate Campaign Kickoff on Saturday, 8/12 from 9-11:30 am at the Rose Garden Farmers Market on Dana Ave at Lincoln High School. https://lnkd.in/gsJ89Jkq I hope to see you soon in the community and on the campaign trail! In service to San Jose, Alex #buildingcommunity #shoor4d6
