What a lovely way to end the week - receiving a certificate of appreciation for judging the Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards. This wasn’t the first time I’ve been a business awards judge. And hopefully not the last. It's helped me improve how I approach awards writing for my business. Here are some of my tips for answering business award submissions: ❓ 𝐀𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Directly answer the questions asked in the submission form. Avoid veering off-topic. 🗣️ 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞. This means avoiding industry jargon. You want judges to clearly understand your submission. 🎭 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲. Tell judges the story about the challenges, solutions and results you’ve had in your business. This approach helps humanise your brand and makes your submission memorable. 📊 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. Use specific data and metrics to demonstrate your business’s success. This makes your claims more credible and impactful. 🔍 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭. Check your submission for typos and grammatical errors. A well-polished entry shows professionalism and attention to detail. 🌟 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Acknowledge the role of your team in achieving success. 🔢 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭. Many awards have word limits on their submissions or time limits on any video submissions. And I’ve read many entries that don’t stick to them. 📅 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲. Give yourself plenty of time to draft, revise and perfect your submission. I found it easy to pick out entries that were rushed or put together at the last minute. And don’t forget to celebrate your achievements! 😉 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬? #awards #businessawards #businesssuccess

🏆𝑰𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒆𝒍𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚?🏆 When I first qualified as a solicitor the quid pro quo used to be that you paid for a ridiculously overpriced dinner / drinks event at a 4⭐ hotel in London somewhere, and in return you might be given an oddly shaped glass trophy inscribed with "3rd best private client lawyer under 25 outside of London with an X in their name" by somebody who has never worked in the private wealth world. We all knew it was a con but went along with it anyway. After all, what else would we put on our website profiles? 🫰💰 Just like a budget airline, the awards industry seems to have discovered the wonders of additional fees. I was astounded to see that you now have to pay a £400 application fee for many of these awards, along with further fees for posting about them on LinkedIn or using a logo on your website. At what point are we going to just admit that these awards are purchased rather than won? Any credibility the self appointed awarding bodies had has long since evaporated. ⭐ 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 "𝑨𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒔" 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔 ⭐ In the spirit of being the change I want to see in the world, here's my proposal - nominate somebody in the comments who you think deserves recognition by tagging them. The rules are few and simple: 1) You may only nominate somebody who is not a colleague. 2) Include a couple of sentences about why you are nominating them. 3) Whichever nomination(s) gets the most likes before 3 July wins. There are no shiny trophies on offer (the ARSE awards are strictly carbon neutral) but you might just make somebody's day by nominating them. I'm fully prepared for this idea to flop, but let's give it a go!

We are excited to announce that Mettal UK LTD has been recognised as winners of the Prestige Awards - South of England for 2023/24. This goes a long way to recognise the dedication that each and every member of our team has given to the business and the projects that we have had the honour of working on in recent years. After receiving the news that Mettal UK had received this award, Managing Director, George Darling said: "The team that we have here is special, they should know that it's because of them that we earned this and with the exciting projects that we have coming up this year, its unlikely to be the last time that they earn such an accolade. Our designers, fabricators and powder coaters show that this area and community produces a truly talented workforce and their work can be seen all across the country in many of the landmark buildings that we pass by every day. The partners that we work with are building the future of Britain and we are so glad that they are doing it powered by Mettal." The Prestige Awards was launched to celebrate the businesses and individuals that consistently offer excellent products and services. The awards team conduct extensive research to identify the major cities and regions around the world with a vibrant SME community and independent scene. They believe that SME businesses are the backbone of any economy, whilst also typically reflecting the unique characteristics of its particular city or region. With each destination having been carefully selected, Prestige readers are invited to nominate businesses that have proven to be the best in their market over the past 12 months. All shortlisted companies put forward in the Prestige Awards are asked to support their nomination with evidence of their work, positive feedback from their clients, information on previous accreditation and recognition as well as highlighting the most outstanding parts of their businesses. The judging panel base their decisions upon areas such as service excellence, quality of the product/service provided, innovative practices, value, ethical or sustainable methods of working, as well as consistency in performance. The winners selected are those who can best demonstrate their strengths in these areas.

Accountancy myths creating barriers for next generation Misconceptions about what a career in accountancy actual entails may be creating unnecessary barriers for many young people, preventing them seeing accountancy as an attainable option. New research from Grant Thornton shows these misconceptions could be limiting the potential talent pool of the profession. Exploring Gen Z’s views of accountancy as a career Grant Thornton discovered some 62% of respondents believed you need high grades to become an accountant. Another 57% said you need to go to university, and the same percentage think training for the qualification is expensive. Father of 4, husband of 1. Director @EPIC. Expert in workplace performance, future of work, hybrid. FCIPD, FLPI, MAC. HR Most Influential. Speaker, writer. Author: HR for Hybrid Working; & Making Hybrid Working Work
I'm doing judging today for several categories in some national industry awards. I enjoy doing this and always learn a lot. One thing that strikes me though is attention to detail when completing the entry form. Each form asks some specific questions related to the category being entered. Around half the entries complete the form really well. Around half don't, though. When reading their entries, it seems as if they haven't even looked at the question being asked or considered what the judges may be looking for - even when its spelt out in black and white for them in detail (eg tell us about this, then that, then the other). As a judge this is frustrating as that entrant has probably got something award-worthy going on but hasn't put their story across well at all. Some tell interesting stories that bear no resemblance to the question being asked. Worse, some entrants simply offer a link to their website which is full of bright, colourful content but means the judge has to search through for the required answers to their questions. If your organisation has done something award-worthy, brilliant. Entering an awards process is a great way to get recognition for that. But give the entry form and its specific requirements the care and attention it deserves. Your effort will get the outcome it deserves. #awards #business #humanresources #learninganddevelopment #culture
