I recently hired a person who would be considered a “job-hopper” because I realize many people are searching for belonging that is rooted in purpose. Individuals pursue degrees and graduate, and if they do not have a strong village, they instantly go into survival mode and accept what they believe is the ‘best’ job offer. The truth is many young professionals (whom I consider to be aged 24-35) never had the socio-economic privilege to discover what it means to live out your purpose in such a way that work does not feel like work, and it still feels meaningful even on the hard days. Many young professionals never had the opportunity to intern, because an unpaid internship is a privilege that many cannot afford. So, the workforce becomes the place where they can explore what works for them and what does not. I admire the person who leaves a place to create room for the person who is purposed to be there and will add great value to that company/organization. We should want to see people in positions that will serve well within that role and to serve well you must have LOVE for what you do. Love will and should always be the foundation of what you do and your WHY. When we love our work, its impact is greater, and the change that we make to the individuals we serve is undeniable and life-changing. Extend grace to those who have finally discovered their path, because you may be overlooking exactly what you have been looking for. Picture: I extended an offer while sitting at a park :-)

It’s May - the Season of Interns is just beginning. College students all over the world explore prospective careers and seek meaningful work experiences during the summer term. Many companies offer internships to fill in for vacationing staff and complete interesting projects. Interns and companies size up the other, wondering if there’s a fit for the future. The *best* organizations recognize the value of the intern and the impact of a good - or bad - experience on their brand. #strategy #leadership #talentmanagement

📢 2024 Internships 📢 A number of businesses across the IOM are promoting a variety of summer internships, or graduate & young person’s programmes, right now. These are all over the web, so I thought it might be beneficial to compile a list to have things in one place. Summer internships can be a great opportunity to gain experience within an office environment, pick up new skills, build your confidence, and add great value to your CV. Here are a few I’ve spotted so far, and I’ve spoken to a few employers who are still in the process of finalising their plans, but for anyone interested feel free to check out or share the following… ➡️ Capital International Group – Graduate & Young Person Programme – https://lnkd.in/en-Qaz2n ➡️ Cains – Legal work experience programme – https://lnkd.in/eWz4Pavd ➡️ Derivco Isle of Man – Graduate scheme – https://lnkd.in/eWKbK28a (the Derivco Apprentice Scheme is an exclusive partnership with UCM – if you’re studying here, get in touch with them!) ➡️ Department of Health and Social Care, Isle of Man Government – Work experience programme – https://lnkd.in/exBjEkcd ➡️ DQ Advocates – Summer internship scheme – https://dq.im/careers/ ➡️ Isle of Man Department for Enterprise – STEP Programme – https://lnkd.in/evrcRupe ➡️ PwC Isle of Man – Summer internships – https://lnkd.in/eQKjjtyt (Other Big 4 firms don't seem to be advertising just yet) ➡️ RED5 Systems – Summer internship - https://lnkd.in/ezH2gBv8 ➡️ Office of the Clerk of Tynwald – One Year Parliamentary Internship, and separate work experience – https://lnkd.in/eNB6gCZu ➡️ Zurich Insurance – loads of summer internships – https://spkl.io/61894LK73 Have I missed anyone off the list? Let me know if so and I can update it, or feel free to post a link to your own in the comments 👇 Don’t forget, we at Paragon Recruitment are still here to help with all things recruitment, from classroom to boardroom 📈 #TeamParagon #IsleofManJobs

“Failure doesn’t mean you are a failure it just means you haven’t succeeded yet.” Years ago, I created an internship program at the City of Brighton. Man, the 1st year was brutal. We had to beg city departments to host. We barely had enough young people apply for the positions, so I was asking every young person I know if they had friend that we could convince to apply. There was no real interview or selection process. Supervisors were frustrated. Young people were too. Fast forward to now. Tomorrow we will host the Growing Grads Summer Job Launch. We turned registration off days ago when we had over ONE HUNDRED young people registered. Attendees will be able to apply to 15 different internships within the city. I am so incredibly proud of the work that my team has done to make this all possible. It takes real teamwork, patience and perseverance. Support from so many is so necessary. Working in this space can be so hard and trying some days. If Plan A doesn't work, work your way down the alphabet. https://lnkd.in/guFMdcGC #internships #careerpathways #summerjobs #youthleadership

🌟 Meet Aryana Barnes, my amazing Human Resources Intern this summer! 🌟 Aryana is a powerhouse of knowledge. Currently a Senior at Columbus State University, she's majoring in Finance and minoring in Human Resource Management. In just her first week, Aryana quickly realized that no matter how much we prepare, life in HR is full of surprises. Every day brings new, unexpected challenges. Internships are incredibly valuable for both the intern and the organization. While I'm teaching Aryana how to navigate the unpredictable nature of HR with an unbiased perspective, she's also teaching me. Her fresh ideas and unique viewpoints are invigorating and often challenge our traditional ways of thinking. When I asked Aryana about her observations on HR, she likened it to "Gentle Parenting." This was a revelation for me, as I had never thought about it in that way before. Her insight made me realize that my approach involves providing wisdom, offering constructive feedback, encouraging critical thinking, and guiding with understanding and empathy. Internships give students like Aryana a chance to gain hands-on experience, develop their skills, and expand their professional networks. For organizations, having interns brings new energy and perspectives, leading to innovation and growth. Please join me in welcoming Aryana to our team! 🚀 Let's celebrate the mutual growth and learning that internships facilitate for everyone involved. #HRIntern #ColumbusStateUniversity #Finance #HumanResourceManagement #Mentorship #LearningTogether #InternshipBenefits #Innovation #ProfessionalGrowth

Earlier this week a friend shared with me a role for an Editorial Intern based in West London, working 9-5. It's looked like a great opportunity for someone starting out to learn about managing an online magazine. But there's a catch, it's unpaid, and you need to bring your own laptop. Travel is covered, but only for Travelcard Zones 1 - 6 🙄 I find it hard to believe that in 2024, unpaid internships are still a thing. Taking up an unpaid role, even for a month, is a luxury only those with financial support from their family can afford. If we as an industry are serious about increasing diversity and promoting #socialmobility, unpaid internships must be abolished. Asking interns to work for free on the premise of gaining 'experience' is exploitative. If interns are delivering work of value then employers must pay at least the minimum wage.

Joining us from the recruiting department, we met with #GlobalPIntern, Maddy K., a rising senior at Bentley University with a double major in Health Studies and Business Studies. Maddy’s team credits her and her fellow recruiting interns for their tremendous efforts supporting our retail locations with staffing this summer. Why did you choose Global for an internship? I chose Global for several reasons. I was initially drawn to Global because of the convenient location and my interest in the HR intern position. However, I picked Global because of the people. During the interview process I was able to speak with several different members of the HR department and everyone that I spoke with was so welcoming and made me feel like I would be a valued member of the company and team. What are you looking to get out of this experience? During this experience, I was mainly looking forward to developing and growing as an employee and a person. I really wanted to become more confident in my public speaking skills along with becoming more comfortable in speaking with others over the phone. What’s been your favorite part of the internship so far? My favorite part of the internship so far has been the opportunity to visit places like the Chelsea terminal and an Alltown Fresh. It was such a cool thing to see these sites operating as well as learning more about day to day procedures. What are you looking to do post-graduation? Although I’m still unsure, I am thinking about going to grad school and using my extra year of eligibility to play volleyball for one more year. What’s struck you about Global? Something that has really resonated during this internship is how much Global cares about its employees and how each employee plays an essential role in the success of the business. Being a small-mid size company, Global has allowed me to interact with not only the higher ups in my department, but in other departments as well. This has not only allowed me to understand what is going on in other departments, but it has also allowed me to build connections and expand my network extensively. #GrowWithGlobal

Unpaid internships can hinder diversity and perpetuate inequality in the workplace. They often favor those who can afford to work for free, excluding talented individuals from underprivileged backgrounds. As a Human Resource manager, I advocate for paid internships to ensure fair access to opportunities and to recognize the value of interns' contributions. Let's work towards a more inclusive and equitable workforce! #PaidInternships #DiversityandInclusion #FairOpportunities"

Happy National Intern Day to these hardworking, intelligent people that I have had the opportunity to get to know and work alongside throughout the summer. It has been such a pleasure to plan and execute events for this group, coordinate and streamline some of their communication, and learn so much about aviation from being on the floor beside them. As the executive intern, it was my job to oversee and make sure they were succeeding at work, and let me just say, they made my job so easy! I have been so blessed to talk to them everyday and develop friendships with them. PVU summer interns, I cannot wait to see how successful you become in your lives. So much love for you all! With that being said, internships aren’t always glamourous. Some days you are so busy that you barely have time to think, and others you have to ask five different people if there is anything you can work on. It is all a continual learning process. It only remains beneficial if you are committed to the organization you are serving and to your own personal and professional growth — which can be draining and an uphill battle sometimes. So, today, take time to thank an intern and encourage them to continue pursuing their professional goals. Letting interns know they are valued, seen, and heard while at work is what leaves a lasting impact and creates a thriving internship program. Not to mention, it makes you a more sought after employer for all employees, not just interns. #nationalinternday Matthew Tweedy, Vyomkesh Sangewar, reilyn larsen, Austin Joy, YOUNGHUN KO, Easton Crandall
