The Cifas National Fraud Database shows cases of facility takeover increased in 2023 by 13% compared to the previous year. This is primarily attributed to a 59% rise in filings from the telecommunications sector alone. As more criminals adapt their methods to impersonate telecoms customers, abuse trust, and reap ill-gotten gains, data sharing has never been more important. Read the insights of Andy Mayo, Head of Fraud at Sky, Mobile UK’s Chief Executive Hamish MacLeod, and Cifas’ Senior Intelligence Analyst, Duncan McLellan, on how we can collectively tackle this growing sector threat. https://lnkd.in/eSWJppUh #Telecoms #TelcoFraud #Fraud #FacilityTakeover #AccountTakeover

As part of the @i3Forum’s #restoretrust initiative, One Consortium, Eli Katz, Founder & CEO XConnect and board member at i3Forum, together with Philippe Millet, Founder & Chair of i3Forum, are delighted to have been invited to participate in the first-ever ministerial level, Global Fraud Summit which was kicked off with a reception at Guild Hall and included an address by HRH Princess Anne. This 3 day event, hosted by the UK Home Secretary, James Cleverly and organised by the UK Home Office, Ministers from the G7, Five Eyes, Singapore and South Korea will this week join together with Industry leaders to discuss the threats posed by organised crime groups and how Government bodies and companies within the private sector can work together to combat this type of fraud. As we’re only too aware in the telecoms industry, fraud against individuals and businesses has grown rapidly to become one of the most prevalent crimes globally and is an organised transnational threat. Fraudsters operate at scale, exploiting telecommunications networks, cyberspace and a population that spends an increasing amount of time online. Fraud types can vary across jurisdictions, but the devastating impact of fraud is universal. It causes significant financial losses for individuals and institutions. It damages trust between consumers and legitimate businesses. It also causes deep distress for victims. The Global Fraud Summit provides a much-needed platform for exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and forging partnerships to safeguard the integrity of telecommunications networks and protect consumers from fraud. For XConnect – the foundation of our DNA is #Trust, and therefore the i3Forum’s #restoreTrust initiative, and engaging with industry, government and regulators – is important to bring Trust back to calls and business messaging. We look forward to seeing what can be achieved when we work together on a global scale to solve this growing challenge. #fraud #telecoms #restoretrust #government #industry #global

You may be surprised to see the Secret Service mentioned alongside financial crimes. Aren't they the ones in dark glasses guarding the President? Matt O'Neill, formerly Deputy-in-Charge of Cybercrime at the USSS, reveals a lesser-known facet of the agency. Indeed, the original purpose of the USSS was to handle the challenge of counterfeited currency. The Secret Service has a long history of investigating financial crimes like counterfeiting and check fraud. In the '90s, investigating check fraud cases involved labor-intensive techniques like analyzing fingerprints, handwriting samples, and surveillance footage. The USSS's mission has evolved, now addressing modern financial crimes in cyberspace, including credit card fraud, wire and bank fraud, and more. As criminals adapt, using technology to perpetrate crimes like mass check theft and alteration with alarming sophistication, so must our defense strategies. Intrigued by the Secret Service's role in modern financial crime prevention? Discover more on how technology is transforming these defense strategies in our latest blog post. #FinancialCrimes #CheckFraud #FraudPrevention
