An amazing job done by Dene Quarry in Cromford, Derbyshire (part of Tarmac) clearing the 'Bear Pit' in the village. Locals are so impressed!! Before & after pictures taken by the people who cleared it. The Bear Pit, which was never actually a bear pit, is part of the Cromford Long sough system - a drainage system for the old lead mines in the area. In 1785 Richard Arkwright (Cotton Mills) modified the sough to divert water to the dam to store it (behind the sluice gates), with a second tunnel which ran to the mill to power machinery. The design means that some of the silt in the water settles in the bear pit rather than blocking up the sough or mill areas. Water flow was far higher in the past than it is now. The Bear Pit is now a listed monument and held in some affection by the Cromford residents. It is important to keep it clear of silt and vegetation to avoid the water backing up in the tunnels. The Cromford sough was about a mile long but connected into many other smaller soughs so the full extent of the area is drains covers many miles, even as far over as Carsington. The first section a mile long was built between 1673 and 1682, mainly funded by investors in London who knew nothing about mining! Pronunciation: 'Sough' rhymes with rough. Cocking Tor Quarry, otherwise known as Robin Quarry, is a very well-hidden disused quarry. The quarry sits on top of an extraordinary little crag overlooking Amber Valley. Home to one of the best E2s on Grit 'Cyclop's Eye' , a product of the late, great Tom Proctor. John Allen also visited this brilliant rock, leaving one of the most photogenic lines in the valley, 'Jelly Ache,', a well-protected E3 area. Most walkers would have passed it by, and if it wasn’t for a toilet break and a place to drink coffee, I’m sure we would have. Ashover is famous for its gritstone, which has a variety of uses, from millstones to building stones. One use you might overlook is making pulping stones for paper manufacturing. This quarry was used for manufacturing millstones and pulping stones, hence why the large rigging. Also, it had good roads in and out for transport. A little bit of geology for you. Around Ashover, the Grit generally has a thick main bed of 200 feet with one or more subsidiary beds below. The main bed consists of medium to coarse-grained sandstone with bands of pebbles. Formerly, an 80-ft face was exposed here, of which the lower portion was seen to be fine-grained, compact, thickly bedded sandstone. The Ashover Grit crops out around the inlier of Carboniferous Limestone at Ashover, though it is masked in places in the north by boulder clay. One of the biggest reasons for higher building and construction standards is to avoid problems such as this.
