NEW #TuesdayTips for Leaders of Volunteers, and everyone working in the civic sector! December was a busy giving season but not all of the donations, especially in-kind items, are going to be helpful or useful to your organization. Most donors have the best intentions and think they are helping by dropping off random items, but sometimes people and companies also knowingly donate "trash" items as a tax write-off, in very bad faith. Dealing with bad donations wastes volunteer and employee time sorting and disposing of items instead of doing their mission critical work. I share my own story of "The Bad Wine Day of 2003", tips on steering good-faith in-kind donors in the right direction, creating a "Disqualified Donors" list and policy, resources on good governance and ethics from Independent Sector, and more.
