Why I think a lot of small businesses struggle I've been a small business owner for a decade, have sold to and coached hundreds of other small businesses. The ones that do well vs. the ones who struggle all share an important quality. They don't get stuck, are open to change and move quickly. It's too easy to second guess yourself if you've never tried something before and its far too easy to come up with a reason why it might not work. In my first business, a busy restaurant, we had three menus, one for lunch (lower pricing), one for dinner (higher pricing) and one for daily specials (daily pricing). My partner and I talked for awhile about the idea of going down to one main menu to remove inefficient pricing and streamline our offerings. It was scary as there were some big differences between lunch and dinner. There were a lot of reasons not to make the change and it felt like a big adjustment. We finally implemented it (another plus of having a good partnership is you feel more empowered) and it turned out to be hugely impactful. The restaurant industry averages somewhere between 3-5% margins and that's the ones that are profitable! We started to hit double digits and this was one of the big reasons for it. We could have easily never tried it, maintained status quo and justified our actions by looking at what others were doing. Changes can be tough but with the right strategy, they can be powerful. I've made so many changes helped so many others do the same and I can count on one hand the number of times that I've had to readjust because it was received poorly. You almost never hear negative comments and most don't even notice or care. It's always so much scarier going in but after, you wonder why you didn't do it years ago.

What is one of the biggest problems with the new tipping legislation? 🤔 It doesn't discourage enough operators (and suppliers) to having this mindset in the screenshot below 🤬 I have worked in hospitality all my life and understand just as much about how cost pressures, the economic climate, skills shortage etc make it as difficult as ever to run a hospitality business. It put me off opening my own venue a couple of years back and fulfilling my own ambition. I sympathise hugely with operators on this. However, for far too long tronc has been mismanaged and abused by some operators looking to continue paying bad wages but using tronc as a way of making this up . Seeing this message from Mikayla Plaziuk today not only frustrated me (that this is the mindset of this particular operator but also of the supplier helping facilitate this management style) but it also saddened me, that this is approach being taken when this legislation is supposed to help in changing the game for our teams. Guaranteed tronc is such bad practice and under the new legislation this will need to be visible for all your staff to see under the transparency piece.
