What do refugees need more than anything? Peace so they can return home. 🏡 🕊️In the absence of peace, they need opportunities to be active members of the communities that have welcomed them, whether through work, school, sports, or other activities. 🧡 #WithRefugees #WorldRefugeeDay UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency

Today marks UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency #WorldRefugeeDay2024, where the world celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. Forced displacement surged to historic new levels across the globe last year. As refugees seek safety they are often robbed of their dignity and autonomy, both by the circumstances of their estrangement and by NGO and governmental support that is frequently short term, conditional and basic. Global Attitudes to Refugees On World Refugee Day 2024, a new 52-country survey by Ipsos and UNHCR reveals enduring public support for refugees, with notable variations in attitudes. The survey highlights key insights: 1. High Global Support: 73% support offering refuge to those fleeing war or persecution. The Middle East, Africa, and Latin America show the highest support, with 93% in Kenya and 92% in Uganda. 2. Public Openness:Half of the respondents support refugees accessing their rights, such as education, healthcare, and jobs. Additionally, 77% support policies for family reunification in asylum countries. 3. Diverse Perspectives: In major host and Western countries, there's a mix of skepticism and support. While a third believe refugees positively contribute to the economy and culture, another third hold the opposite view, with concerns about integration, security, and public services. 4. Active Support:Despite concerns, many are taking action—one-third have supported refugees through donations or social media. However, 37% believe international aid for host countries is insufficient. The survey aims to deepen the global understanding of public attitudes towards refugees amid unprecedented levels of forced displacement, now over 120 million globally. Let's continue to support and understand the refugee experience, promoting informed and compassionate responses. #WorldRefugeeDay #HopeAwayFromHome #RefugeeSupport
