We are proud to announce that EIT Food Accelerator Network 2019 alumnus FreezeM has raised a $14.2m series A round, to disrupt the insect farming segment with a breeding-as-a-service large-scale protein production model.   The investment round was led by an undisclosed group of “industrial investors” and the European Innovation Council Fund (EIC Fund), along with FreezeM’s existing investors and partners, and will help the Israeli startup build a hub of breeding facilities to supply insect farmers in different regions.   FreezeM, which currently has a growing team of 27 people in Israel and Europe, ultimately aims to provide a series of regional BSF breeding hubs to supply the global insect ag industry. The startup has filed patents around all of its tech, including counting and dosing the tiny neonates, so customers get exactly what they require. Currently shipping from sites in Israel and Germany, FreezeM's next goal is to expand their market reach, their production, and to close large off-take agreements with customers.    “We envisage one hub in each continent. There is already big traction from the market, and I think we’ll see a gradual shift from the vertically integrated approach that the first companies in the market took, because now it’s much more difficult to raise money for CapEx. Everybody is focused on showing revenues and profitability. And this is aligned with our strategy, because we can save insect companies all the hassle and risk and CapEx involved with setting up their own breeding hubs. The insect ag industry is at a turning point. You see more players entering the field to become producers, not just to test the market. From supplying ingredients to #scaling manufacturing, partnerships with industry experts are critical for the #cellularagriculture field’s success. Over the past month, we have also seen partnerships and collaborations from within the industry between cellular agriculture food players and enabling technology #supplychain startups. At the end of October, #cellag #dairy startup BIOMILQ announced a collaboration with molecular farming startup Tiamat Sciences Corp. to develop human prolactin, a key protein to support the growth and productivity of Biomilq’s human mammary epithelial cell system. Earlier in October, Icelandic molecular farming company ORF Genetics hf. announced a similar partnership with South Korean #cultivatedmeat startup SeaWith Inc. to secure a stable supply of ORF Genetic’s growth factors to accelerate its cultured beef product development. Beyond cell-based foods, at the end of September, #precisionfermentation fat startup Nourish Ingredients announced a partnership with Boston Bioprocess, a fermentation-focused CDMO that launched in October 2022. In addition to food producers, Boston Bioprocess also partnered with Australian precision fermentation network startup Cauldron Ferm to create a path to industrial-scale production. Agriculture is the backbone of our nation, and it's heartening to see the convergence of technology and agriculture through agritech startups. The discussions were nothing short of inspiring. We delved into various facets of agritech, including precision farming, AI-driven crop management, market linkages, and sustainable practices. The potential for growth and positive transformation in the agritech sector is immense. One key takeaway was the emphasis on collaboration.
