In a recent sprint hosted by Europol, Child Rescue Coalition, in collaboration with 32 investigators and child protection partners, took part in a week-long operation targeting the highest harm offenders in the child abuse space where 197 buyers were identified. Child Rescue Coalition's technology was able to help law enforcement partners identify and investigate live streaming offenders and deconflict their efforts. We know that there are tens of thousands of LDCA (live distance child abuse) happening around the world and each offender can be responsible for sexually abusing children a countless number of times. Training and working with such dedicated professionals whose mission is to safeguard children and arrest high harm offenders is such an honor. Yesterday, we received a chilling reminder of why our collaborative work in child protection is so important when the Australian Federal Police, Queensland Police Service, and New South Wales Police Force released a joint statement on Operation Tenterfield, revealing that a former childcare worker has been charged with sexually abusing 91 children. Our thoughts are with the victim-survivors of these alleged crimes, their families and the many law enforcement agents who worked tirelessly on this investigation. This case is a grave example that the sexual abuse and exploitation of children is a relentless crime that needs a strong joint response across the child protection system. NSW Police Force's Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald noted that this is one of the most horrific cases of alleged child abuse their detectives have seen. The genesis of Operation Tenterfield is linked to QPS locating alleged child abuse images and videos on the dark web in 2014, and is a reminder that technology provides added opportunities to child sex offenders to further traumatise their victims long after the physical abuse has taken place. The ways that offenders elude detection is constantly changing in this complex environment, and it is the important work of our partners in law enforcement, financial crimes, regulators, online platforms, NGOs, the legal community and all those with a role in combating child sexual exploitation that helps to keep children safe from harm. When we speak about this confronting and despicable crime in public forums with a nationwide audience - as difficult as the discussion can be - the better our ability and capacity to protect children will become. The Children In The Pictures documentary, aired in Australia in 2021 and in the UK on Channel 4 January 2024, takes us into Task Force Argos, a renowned Australian-based police investigative team, as they go undercover to rescue children from online sexual abuse. We applaud the Argos team – and all law enforcement focused on child sexual abuse. Their work is essential for detecting and stopping offenders and finding child victims. However, there are also many efforts to prevent harm from occurring in the first place. The essential work of law and enforcement agencies, as depicted by the documentary, cannot be the only weapon to be used in this battle. We must take proactive actions to encourage people to seek help for their worrying thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Projects like #2PS and other initiatives aim to run parallel to law enforcement efforts, reinforcing prevention against #CSAE. Our experts tried to answer the questions and challenges the documentary raises. The OCSAE team demonstrates that properly trained professionals respond better to victims of tech-assisted CSA. Unfortunately our practice shows that too few victims are responded to by such specialist services. We must do better. Read the HMICFRS report here: https://bit.ly/4897NBP "We are also concerned about how many officers & staff use victim-blaming language that implies (intentionally or unintentionally) a child is partially or wholly responsible for abuse that has happened to them" This is unacceptable. A child is never responsible for their abuse. "We also found many missed opportunities to identify suspects and disrupt their activity, and to carry out evidence-led prosecutions." It is only by disrupting the activity of perpetrators and calling them to account that we will ever start to turn the tide on child sexual abuse "The voice of children was often absent in the cases we reviewed. But we did see some good examples of when officers and staff had taken the time to understand children’s experiences and record them." Victims and survivors are experts in their own experience. Listen to them.

🌐 Stand with Us to Protect Children Online 🌐 As one of the 180 signatories, I stand firmly behind the proposed EU Regulation to combat child sexual abuse online. This vital legislation is a significant step towards a safer online environment for our children. It builds upon child protection practices adopted by internet companies since 2009 and places them within a transparent and accountable legal framework. Proven tools like PhotoDNA, with its astonishing accuracy rate of 1 in 50 billion, have been instrumental in identifying millions of CSAM images worldwide. If this Regulation is not enacted, we risk a ban on critical child protection tools, leaving countless children exposed to danger. To protect our children online while upholding the Rule of Law, we must act now. The overwhelming support for these measures across EU Member States underscores the urgency of this cause. Last week our CEO, Anne Basham, testified at a U.S. Judiciary Hearing in the House of Representatives on the critical issue of child exploitation, covering the rise of CSAM, child trafficking among unaccompanied minors, and social media's role. This is a global security crisis, with human trafficking generating $150 billion annually. Did you know... ❗Children are the primary target, with the average age of victims ranging from 11 to 14 years old. ❗Central American children face risks on their journey to the U.S., often entering an overwhelmed foster care system. ❗Online exploitation is rampant, with 75% of sex trafficking victims advertised online. ❗According to a recent UNODC report, the majority of victims identified in cases of exploitation were self-rescued, meaning they self-reported or even escaped exploitation on their own.
