Messiah University - Education with a Christian WorldView This private Christian university in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania serves approximately 3,300 students in over 80 bachelor’s and master’s programs. From offerings in health services (like athletic training and nursing) to business programs to science and engineering, there are many choices for students who would like to pursue a rigorous academic curriculum in a Christian context. Messiah students can get involved in over 60 clubs and organizations as well as athletic teams, research opportunities, service learning, internships, study-abroad opportunities, and an honors program.  The university has a reputation for integrating the Christian faith into all of their academic programs and activities. And their “mission is to educate men and women toward maturity of intellect, character and Christian faith in preparation for lives of service, leadership and reconciliation in church and society.” When I visited the 471-acre campus, I enjoyed seeing the Oakes Museum of Natural History - a 10,000-square-foot museum located on the first two floors of the Jordan Science Center. The museum serves as a learning environment for students in many different disciplines and provides them with opportunities for internships and volunteer activities.  It’s also open to the public on Saturdays! Another shoutout is the Messiah University dual-enrollment program in which high school students can take college courses - at a reduced tuition rate - to satisfy both high school and college credit requirements. Whether the students end up attending Messiah or another institution, they can get a head start on college coursework (on-campus or online) - exploring areas of interest and potentially shortening the number of semesters they have left to earn a degree, thereby saving money in the process. Another consideration for college funding is that all new students can expect to get some financial support from Messiah! There is a lot to consider when selecting a college and learning about the unique programs offered can be very helpful. This sudden, and tragic, announcement about closure of the the BFA and MFA programs at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is bringing back recent nightmares. Students, parents, faculty and staff were told about this decision the day before the start of the semester (which is also the day tuition is due, interestingly). Imagine doing that to a close-knit and proud community of creatives who LOVE an institution that offers some of the best fine arts training in the world, thanks to the talented faculty. I can tell you from the announcements, meetings, and PR around this completely unnecessary decision by the Board of Trustees at PAFA, and from my experience in universities over 30 years, that these "financially-driven" disaster capitalist decisions are complete fabrications and come from the hostility of Boards of Trustees to education as well as their absolute disrespect and even contempt for students, faculty, the public, and surrounding communities. The Boards are helped out immensely, of course, in their destructive work by the complicity, docility, and venality of the higher echelons of university administrators whom they hand pick for the job. The public should call for a complete overhaul of university administration. In its current design, all but the most well-endowed universities (plus the community colleges) do not want to spend money on your children, despite the fact that everyone pays inflated tuition already! The people who truly care about your children - and the future - are the faculty, who are currently weak and cowed by cut-throat bean counters at the top, as well as underpaid lower-level staff. Anyone who has bought the story that faculty are lazy, woke, and "the problem": I beg you to look into what is really going on. You are being taken for a ride. Most university administrations and Boards of Trustees -- not all, but I would venture most -- are violating the public trust with these bogus crises at institutions of higher education. They are compromising the education that our young people receive and divesting from the most important thing in life: the youth -- and the mentorship that develops their talents, their hearts, and their minds. Colleges may have slick PR firms writing their copy, but it's empty and it is time we call this out. Watching treasured institutions be intentionally destroyed is painful. Americans need to stand up for something better. We deserve it. The next generation deserves it. And we have the power to kick these disaster capitalists and their willing executioners off our campuses. When you hear of major staff and faculty reductions at local institutions, fight back. Another full-circle moment! Last week, I had the privilege of accompanying our latest cohort of students to Christ Church, Oxford, supporting them as they explore university admissions and higher education opportunities. Reflecting on nearly 3.5 years at Thinking Black, I'm overwhelmed by the impact we've made. From trips to publishing agencies to student publications, celebration days, and creating decolonised essay content on identity, community, and heritage - all centered on Black scholarship. It all began with a chance encounter that led me to the ACT essay prize, where I wrote my first academic piece for the 'Our Time is Now' module: "Why didn't the Tottenham riots turn into a revolution?" That moment was truly transformative. It gave me the skills and confidence to professionally articulate my thoughts and feelings while embracing my own experiences - I still vividly remember where I was and how I felt during those riots. As I prepare to take a brief hiatus from Thinking Black to pursue my master's degree, I'm filled with both sadness and excitement. Sad to step back from this life-changing organisation, but thrilled to watch it grow, develop, and adapt to support even more students. To all young Black individuals out there: please get involved with Thinking Black in any way you can - participate, work with us, or simply keep an eye on our progress. Graduations: Attend Everything!! As I look back at the Commencement ceremonies I've attended, it did not hit me how memorable they were till I saw the Class of 2020, especially high school students, miss out on theirs. I felt awful for them - its the one time that they truly deserved a graduation for all their work, especially after 13 years in school. Not saying that elementary and middle school ceremonies aren't important, but they aren't the same compared to high school. You'll only have one. In your life. Even with marriages and children, you can have more than one. So attend every celebration, pre and post ceremony you can. It'll be a fantastic memory decades down the road. Be proud of what you earned, and remember why they call it Commencement> Its a start of your next stage. In this world of AI, online classes, and mass certifications, the depth and breadth of formal education are still unmatched. For two decades of hype, everyone still attends standard schooling, goes to an institution to finish college, and then pursues advanced degrees. Its a testament to your dedication to better yourself and give you a lifelong competitive edge. This year, for college graduation, its even more special: this is the 2020 high school class that was hindered from attending their high school one. So, my best wishes to all of you. Enjoy.
