It’s been 10 years since the Fort Hood, TX Shooting that killed 3 Soldiers and wounded 12 others. The shooter then killed himself when confronted by a military police officer. The investigation went on for months after the shooting, interviewing and obtaining sworn statements from 169 witnesses. The results of the investigation, “We find no indication of his medical and personal records suggesting Specialist Lopez-Lopez was likely to commit a violent act,” Lt. Gen. Joseph Martz. “There were no clear warning signs.” - according to the Army. But there were. -Multiple Deployments as an active duty infantry soldier -Counseled for non-promotion -Became a team leader, but was replaced because a Private First Class was viewed as more qualified -Received a permanent profile -Reclass to 88M (motor transport operator) from Infantry Soldier -Multiple medical appointments; physically and mentally -Grandfather died Oct 2013 -Mother died unexpectedly a month later, November 2013 -Financial Issues -Family issues -High turnover rate of Leadership -Army high operational tempo and manning shortages This is just to name a few- and these are the Grievances in reference to the Pathway to Violence. 10 years later those of us in the community of Workplace Violence Prevention, know that even just a few of those grievances are something very important to take note of. They may be spaced apart by months, but it’s still important to know how to recognize the signs. Imagine for a moment that your boss—not trained career law enforcement, nor an independent judiciary, nor an independent jury of your peers—was the one to decide whether or not one of your co-workers had committed a serious, violent crime against you. Removing serious crimes like sexual assault and murder from the purview of military commanders, who are not trained to deal with these crimes, is a major step in the right direction. But more should be done to make UCMJ independent from commanders, especially in garrison environments. The whole system of UCMJ is absolutely bonkers, does not serve Soldiers’ best interests, and does not inspire trust in the chain of command. https://lnkd.in/eNyH4m3E

Chances are that part of their answer would include the fact that they wanted to serve others and make a difference. The same could be said of police officers. Would be interesting to see a cost comparator between individuals at MCTC and a civilian establishment, I understand that they are not directly comparable, perhaps they should be.

Equal Justice is a fundamental principle that should apply universally, whether in civilian life or while serving in the Armed Forces. As a Retired Service Member and former Military Police Soldier, I have firsthand witnessed instances where senior officers and senior enlisted individuals receive preferential treatment even after being charged with serious crimes such as Assault, Domestic Violence, DUI, and Possession. Sadly, this disparity in treatment extends beyond the military into civilian life. A recent news article highlighted a concerning case where an Air Force General was allowed to continue serving despite being found guilty on some charges in a Sexual Assault case. Such occurrences are not uncommon, shedding light on the challenges of ensuring accountability and fairness within the military hierarchy. These incidents raise critical questions about the integrity of the military justice system and its impact on the morale and well-being of service members.
