The final 2023 event for the Ottawa Geotechnical Group (OGG) was truly captivating. Kimberly Martin, PhD, PE, representing KELLER, presented "Advancing Sustainability in the Geotechnical Industry," illuminating Keller’s strides in this field. What struck me was the rarity of sustainable development being a central focus in every project, especially in design considerations. While feasibility and cost are typically pivotal in project decisions, the significance of sustainability is gradually taking center stage. Present designs often lean heavily on existing conditions without a robust focus on future implications. Though sustainability is a frequently heard term, genuine contemplation and prioritization of its principles are uncommon. This event pushed me to ponder deeply on how design choices could profoundly impact future generations. It underscored the imperative of integrating future scenarios into present design methodologies and being acutely aware of their lasting consequences. Understanding the broader implications of design choices is essential. I learned that incorporating sustainable practices isn't just a trend; it's a responsibility toward future environmental and societal health. I'm grateful for the eye-opening experience and the opportunity to delve into the critical role of design in shaping tomorrow's world. A heartfelt thank you to the Ottawa Geotechnical Group (OGG) Geotechnical Group (OGG) team for curating such insightful events that delve into the multidimensional facets of geotechnical engineering and design.

After a few years of trying, we finally found a way to make this happen! Excited to visit University of New Brunswick and Brandon Searle for this event and discuss the future of #industrializedconstruction in Canada 🍁 🇨🇦 and elsewhere. The first thing I will share is that the principles for #industrializedconstruction are universal and therefore can be taught and understood across contexts. It is up to us to translate our knowledge into different situations. That is the journey I am fortunate enough to be on - taking the principles learned at Luleå University of Technology and applying them at Lindbäcks Bygg and then Volumetric Building Companies. The most common reaction is “we can’t do that” often meaning “we have never done that before”. What happens next is the difference between status quo and progress. Changing a system is hard work, bit by bit. Let’s talk about that - what are the bits and how do we work to change our construction methods to give more people a place to live?

Clear and concise overview. Carbon reduction operational and embodied.
We recently shared KieranTimberlake's latest The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2030 Commitment reporting, but wanted to frame it as part of a broader discussion on why our industry needs to shift focus to reducing carbon, not just energy. We asked Associate Kit Elsworth from our Research Group, and member of the National AIA 2030 Working Group for the past four years, to share some resources and lessons learned. As part of an ongoing dialogue, we look forward to hearing your thoughts and questions.

Canada’s 2030 emissions reduction roadmap, entitled “A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy,” was released in December 2020. The plan notes the Government of Canada will: “ensure new federal buildings are net-zero and that all major building retrofits will be low-carbon, reducing embodied carbon in construction projects by 30% starting in 2025, and ensuring 75% of domestic office floor space (new leases and lease renewals) will be in net-zero carbon climate resilient buildings starting in 2030. 🌲 If you're curious about the importance of embodied carbon, check out this informative webinar: "𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻: 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀," Special thanks to Marcos Alejandro B. for highlighting this valuable resource! #EmbodiedCarbon #NetZero #Sustainability #ClimateAction

Political agreement on the revised Construction Products Regulation reached Today the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament reached a provisional political agreement on a proposal to revise the Construction Products Regulation. The provisional agreement reached now needs to be endorsed and formally adopted by both institutions. The Belgian Presidency of the Council of European Union will have the responsibility of finalising the text. It is expected that the new Regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union in Spring 2024. The UBAtc monitored the discussions that took place in the Council and the Parliament since the adoption of the proposal of the European Commission in March 2022, but we have not seen the draft text since the trilogue negotiations started in July 2023. We look forward to studying the final text when it becomes available. With the 28th United Nations Climate Change conference (COP 28) coming to an end, setting increased environmental requirements is a hot topic and many anticipate that the Construction Products Regulation will provide room just that. As such, the Construction Products Regulation is not intended to set criteria, but obliges manufacturers to use a common European language to declare performances. However, together with the Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR), Member States will have the means to oblige manufacturers to determine and declare environmental performance and Member States will be able to set (common) requirements. What the sector will be interested in, is not the performance of the individual products, but the environmental performance of the construction works and buildings. You can consult the Council's press release at the occasion of the political agreement here: https://lnkd.in/eM_ewpW9 You will find the Parliament's press release here: https://lnkd.in/evvmvwGn Belgian Presidency of the Council of European Union #UBAtc #ETA #ATG #CEMarking #CPR
