Beyond excited to write this post. The man pictured below is a lot more than a Structural Engineer, but a true leader. To many, he goes by Dr. Mahmoud Issa. To me, he goes by Dad or "Pops". He has always been my hero, and always motivated me to be the best form of myself. I can't put into words how much I appreciate him, and how much love he has provided me throughout my years. Seeing that he was nominated for Mentor of the Year was one of my proudest moments, ever. One LinkedIn post doesn't serve him justice, as I could spend hours writing about his qualities. But here are a few points that he always made, that really speak volume of who he is: 1) He is in the office at 6 AM, and I always asked him, why not come a little later? His Response: "Because I respect the rest of the HBM team, and because many of the young Engineers look to me for guidance. I would not be a leader if I wasn't available for them." 2) "Work is a Blessing" He always instilled in me that work is a blessing. Coming from Lebanon in the 70s, him and my uncles didn't have much, but capitalized on every chance they had. In just 3 years, he was able to achieve his BS and MS degree. Although their journey wasn't the easiest, they felt that they were luckier than most, and considered anything in life a blessing. In a time where it seems like everybody wants to get away from the work force and go on vacation, this is a very valuable message to push. 3) "When you do something, you do it right, and with good intention." He is a perfectionist at heart, but not for his personal gain. He always discussed that one of the most important aspects of life is respecting your tasks and giving your honest effort on whatever you do, to positively impact your community. 4) "Family is the most important aspect of Life" Everything he has done, has been for the family. No matter how much he sacrificed growing up, he constantly emphasized that what he cares about is making sure he takes care of his family. Until now, all of us 5 siblings, young or old, look to him for guidance and advice. 5) "If you have the opportunity to do so, give back in any way" Being a first-generation immigrant, he didn't have the luxury of giving back to the community as much as he wanted to, but did more than enough by instilling the importance of community into us. His simple acts of kindness went a long way. An example of this is his love for his garden. Covering a few thousand square feet around my childhood home, we grew up working on the garden every summer, which kept expanding year by year. At some point, I asked him, "This is more food than we can even eat in the summertime, why do we have to keep expanding?" His response: "The more that we grow, the more we can provide to others." Now anytime he goes to visit friends or family, he brings them bags full of veggies and fruits, with a wide smile on his face. To my manager, mentor, father, hero, and best friend in the world, Congratulations!!!
Congratulations 2024 ACEC Illinois Mentor of the Year Nominee: Mahmoud Issa, HBM Engineering Group, LLC - Senior Project Manager HBM Engineering Group, LLC #mentoroftheyear #nominee #acecil #celebrateengineering

Hear Matthew Hallowell and Elif Erkal, PhD explain at our safety summit why measuring HECA allows us to not only measure safety performance but also monitor it. HECA measurements supplement the deficiencies of measuring safety by only looking at TRIR and/or leading indicators. In collaboration with Edison Electric Institute, The INGAA Foundation, Inc. and many others, HECA is becoming that common metric we can rely on to compare outcomes, assess trends, and make strategic decisions. Watch the presentation here: https://lnkd.in/g3sferh3 In our knowledge center, you will find the peer-reviewed paper on what is HECA and how to use it. In our communities of practice calls (open to CSRA members and non-members) early next year, we will be hearing from industry professionals on how they are deploying HECA, success stories, and lessons learnt. #constructionsafety #constructionmanagement
