Through the Predictive Real-time Emissions Technologies Reducing Aircraft Induced Lines in the Sky (PRE-TRAILS) Exploratory Topic, ARPA-E envisions the development of an aviation contrail predictive system, which could inform pilots and ground controllers in real-time whether an airplane is likely to produce persistent aircraft-induced cirrus. PRE-TRAILS projects are developing the diagnostics and predictive tools needed to explore further mitigation of contrail-related climate change. Boeing is one of five teams working toward this goal. Learn more about their work below 👇
What’s the weather like up there? We’re about to find out. 👀 Our airplanes feature state-of-the-art weather and turbulence reporting capabilities. In our latest research project, we’re working with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s ARPA-E and industry stakeholders to improve our understanding of how persistent contrails form. The research will test new sensor technologies to accurately measure humidity at cruise altitudes. More: https://bit.ly/3RmfCOe

At Ideas for Change, we are constantly exploring the intersections of technology, innovation, and societal impact. Do you know how electromagnetic fields can affect humans, insects, and planetary health? The vast deployment of 5G is now in the spotlight, and there is a lot of uncertainty around whether it can affect or not our daily lives, and how. This webinar is the first of a series of four and will explain with plain yet scientific rigor what are the electromagnetic fields, clarifying some of the common assumptions around its effects, as well as the main areas of scientific research covered in the ETAIN project. Get ready for the second chapter, launching 🔜! https://lnkd.in/d8chvVuj

A couple updates to share: 🖋️ Earlier this month, I completed my honors thesis in MMSS and Political Science, "Redesigning the Filibuster for More Effective Lawmaking in a Polarized Senate." I'm proud to have received the Janda Prize for a distinguished honors thesis in Political Science from Northwestern. In my thesis, I introduced a novel game theory-based model to predict how different rules around the filibuster and cloture could impact productivity, bipartisanship, and policy stability in the Senate. Using this model, I concluded that restoring the talking filibuster is the best path forward for filibuster reform, matching the ideas of leading reform proponents including Senator Jeff Merkley. I supported the predictions of my model with quantitative analyses that answered: * How costly would obstruction need to be to change the outcome of Senate cloture votes? * How has the nuclear option impacted confirmation votes on presidential nominations? You can read the thesis in the attached PDF or online here: https://lnkd.in/gzAvHvQv 🖥️ Along with the completion of my thesis, I have released version 0.2.1 of my new R package {filibustr} to CRAN! You can install it in R using `install.packages("filibustr")`. Version 0.3.0 is coming soon 👀 I'd love to hear what you think about my thesis and {filibustr}!
