🔒 Happy Data Privacy Day! 🔒 It's more crucial than ever to take control of our personal data in this digital age, because it helps secure our personal privacy, financial affairs, personal and professional integrity, and contributes to the overall effort to reduce cybercrime and its wide-reaching impacts. Here are 7 essential tips my team developed to empower you to safeguard your digital footprint: Check Your Apps: Regularly review the apps on your devices. Understand what data they access and remove any apps you no longer use. Always download apps from reputable sources. Enable Auto Updates: Keep your software up-to-date. Regular updates often include critical security patches that protect your data from new threats. Reject Optional Cookies: Be mindful when websites ask to track your activity. Rejecting optional cookies can limit the amount of data that websites collect about you. Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with privacy policies and your rights under the applicable laws. Understanding these can help you make informed decisions about who has access to your data. Use Caution with AI Tools: While AI tools offer convenience and efficiency, they can also collect extensive data. Be selective about the tools you use and the information you share with them. Secure Your Socials: Adjust your privacy settings on social media platforms to control who sees your posts and personal information. Think twice before sharing sensitive information publicly. Use MFA Where Possible: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security. Whenever possible, enable MFA to protect your accounts from unauthorized access. Let's take these steps together to create a safer digital environment for ourselves and others. Your data is valuable; protect it! Data is the new gold and it is inconceivable to think of what might happen if the data of your consumers get compromised. Data breach is a serious concern and it poses a threat to your credibility. Data protection is compelled by the law. As a company that collects and process data, you are required to put up measures to protect the data you collect from unauthorized access. Below are some of the measures you can take to protect your data from being compromised; • Minimize Data Collection: Adopt a minimalist approach when it comes to collecting user data. Only request information that is essential for your website's functionality or to provide valuable services. • Fortify Security Measures: Assure your users that their personal information is guarded like a treasure chest. Detail the security measures you've implemented, such as encryption, firewalls, and regular vulnerability assessments. Give them peace of mind knowing their data is well-protected • Respect User Choices: Empower your users with control over their personal data. Explain how they can access, update, or delete their information. Offer opt-out mechanisms for targeted advertising or data sharing, demonstrating your commitment to their privacy preferences. Remember, a solid Privacy Policy builds trust and strengthens your brand. #gdprcompliance #compliance #dataprotection #dataprotectionlaw #dataprotectionofficer #dataprivacy I found this helpful and timely post by Abimo Olayiwola and decided to add the following to it: Data privacy breach in the corporate clime is a two edged sword which affects the two major players involved (Data Subjects and Data Controllers). The implications are not only detrimental to the Data Subjects, it also affects the Collectors and Controllers alike. While Data Subjects will experience varing degrees of privacy breaches, corporate entities stand the risk of losing client trust and business prestige. In fact, under the GDPR, entities in breach of Data Subject rights may receive fines up to $20,000 or 4% of its global annual revenue, whichever is greater. I have identified 5 measures that can be adopted to mitigate data privacy breaches: • Engage a Data Protection Officer (DPO) • Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments • Respect Data Subject rights • Adopt Access Restriction measures like encryption, 2 step verification codes etc. • Train Staffs and individuals on compliance obligations as well as the implications of not complying with regulatory frameworks. I hope this was helpful....
