Afrobeats has steadily risen in popularity over the last decade to emerge as one of the world's most popular music genres. While it seems like the ascent of the West African music genre to the top was quick, its success actually lies in forebears that lay the groundwork like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade. In this article for African Arguments, I trace the history of Afrobeats, its present and what's up next. read it now with the link below https://lnkd.in/d7Q24cVZ

African music is often associated with ancestral percussive rhythms, but its influence on world music is much broader. Blues, jazz, rock, reggae, bossa nova, samba... all these genres are descendants of African music. As a black man actively engaged in using new technologies to recreate narratives about African culture, I am conducting research on the representation of electronic music from an Afro-aesthetic perspective. For this purpose, I have chosen Drum and Bass, an electronic music genre rooted in African music. Drum and Bass is characterized by its fast and percussive beats, inspired by traditional African rhythms. My research aims to explore how Drum and Bass can be used to represent African culture in a contemporary and innovative way. I am investigating how Afro-Brazilian artists are using this genre to express their identity and culture. I believe that Afro-Brazilian electronic music has the potential to be a powerful tool for raising awareness and celebrating African culture. #Sweden101 Question 11: What is the Government’s Music Export Prize? The winner of the Government’s Music Export Prize 2023 was announced earlier this week. What is this prize and why is it significant? The Prize is awarded every year to an artist who has been internationally successful during the preceding year and has contributed to Swedish musical export success and to a positive image of Sweden. A jury nominates and selects the winners of the various prizes. It has been given out since 1997, with notable winners such as ABBA and Ludwig Göransson who won this year’s Oscar for Best Original Score. The winner of the Government’s Music Export Prize 2023 is Loreen, who is the first female artist to have won the Eurovision Song Contest twice. Her winning song in 2023, titled “Tattoo”, has been played half a billion times. It made its way into the charts and the media in 30 countries, and is the fifth most streamed song in Eurovision history. The other nominees of last year were Ilya Salmanzadeh (songwriter & producer), Martin Fröst (clarinetist & conductor), Viagra Boys (punk band) and Zara Larsson (singer & songwriter). Have you ever listened to Loreen’s songs? Which one is your favourite? #Sweden101 is a series launched by the Consulate General of Sweden in Hong Kong to tackle questions the general public has towards Sweden. The current landscape of Latin music is a symphony of record-breaking sales, sold-out concerts, and mainstream acceptance, marking a global explosion of the genre. As CBS Texas reports, "There is no denying Latin Music in 2023 is seeing a global explosion backed by all kinds of record-breaking sales, sold-out concerts, and acceptance in mainstream culture." This surge is a departure from the early 2000s when Latin artists often recorded in English to reach a wider audience. Today, artists like Bad Bunny, who has become Spotify's most streamed artist ever, and groups like Grupo Frontera are embracing their roots by performing in their native Spanish. Their success is a powerful reminder of the universal language of music, transcending linguistic barriers and connecting people worldwide. Maykol Sanchez, U.S. Latin Head of Artists and label Partnerships for Spotify, encapsulates this sentiment: "We are living through unprecedented times. It's a beautiful thing to be a part of." The Recording Industry Association of America's data further underscores this trend, with Latin music revenues exceeding $1 billion last year, a figure set to climb even higher in 2023. The influence of Latin music extends beyond streaming platforms and charts; it's about representation and pride for the 62 million Latinos in the U.S. Fans like Angela Alvidrez express this impact, saying, "It makes me feel proud of the Mexican culture because all that was popular was American singers. So, I don't know, it feels cool." As we witness this cultural phenomenon, it's clear that Latin music is not just a genre but a movement, shaping the future of global music and cultural expression. #LatinoPower #CulturalCelebration https://lnkd.in/eZz5TU5X
