Afrobeats has steadily risen in popularity over the last decade to emerge as one of the world's most popular music genres. While it seems like the ascent of the West African music genre to the top was quick, its success actually lies in forebears that lay the groundwork like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade. African music is often associated with ancestral percussive rhythms, but its influence on world music is much broader. Blues, jazz, rock, reggae, bossa nova, samba... all these genres are descendants of African music. As a black man actively engaged in using new technologies to recreate narratives about African culture, I am conducting research on the representation of electronic music from an Afro-aesthetic perspective. For this purpose, I have chosen Drum and Bass, an electronic music genre rooted in African music. Drum and Bass is characterized by its fast and percussive beats, inspired by traditional African rhythms. My research aims to explore how Drum and Bass can be used to represent African culture in a contemporary and innovative way. I am investigating how Afro-Brazilian artists are using this genre to express their identity and culture. I believe that Afro-Brazilian electronic music has the potential to be a powerful tool for raising awareness and celebrating African culture. #Sweden101 Question 11: What is the Government’s Music Export Prize? The winner of the Government’s Music Export Prize 2023 was announced earlier this week. What is this prize and why is it significant? The Prize is awarded every year to an artist who has been internationally successful during the preceding year and has contributed to Swedish musical export success and to a positive image of Sweden. A jury nominates and selects the winners of the various prizes. It has been given out since 1997, with notable winners such as ABBA and Ludwig Göransson who won this year’s Oscar for Best Original Score. The winner of the Government’s Music Export Prize 2023 is Loreen, who is the first female artist to have won the Eurovision Song Contest twice. Her winning song in 2023, titled “Tattoo”, has been played half a billion times. It made its way into the charts and the media in 30 countries, and is the fifth most streamed song in Eurovision history. The other nominees of last year were Ilya Salmanzadeh (songwriter & producer), Martin Fröst (clarinetist & conductor), Viagra Boys (punk band) and Zara Larsson (singer & songwriter). Today, artists like Bad Bunny, who has become Spotify's most streamed artist ever, and groups like Grupo Frontera are embracing their roots by performing in their native Spanish.  Their success is a powerful reminder of the universal language of music, transcending linguistic barriers and connecting people worldwide.
