In a new opinion piece for The Chronicle of Higher Education, Ted Hadzi-Antich Jr., Associate Professor of Government at Austin Community College and founder of The Great Questions Foundation, shares how liberal education courses and programs are growing and thriving at community colleges—many with support from the Teagle Foundation: "This perception that community colleges are more oriented toward the trades than the liberal arts is still common, but it’s also outdated and false. The primary function of community colleges in our society has been steadily shifting away from technical and pre-professional education and toward liberal education for some time now ... As students are increasingly losing access to liberal-education courses and programs at private and state institutions, the opposite seems to be happening at community colleges. The mission in practice of community colleges today is not what it was a generation ago. According to enrollment trends and degree completion, that mission, now and for the foreseeable future, has a lot to do with liberal education. In well-designed lower-division humanities and liberal-arts courses, community-college students talk about common human values and concerns, across their personal and principled differences. There, they begin to build a shared sense of being human together, as they recognize the complexity of our moral, political, and social lives." I am in the purpose of helping people by using a pedagogy fused with love of self, love of others, and equity.
Tawn Hauptli from Mesa Community College and myself, on behalf of South Mountain Community College, will be presenting at the 2023 Student Success Conference. We will be presenting on a framework we use in our EDU230, Diversity in Education class, called the Equity Literacy framework created by Paul Gorski. Equity literacy is a holistic framework that aims to promote fairness and justice in schools. It is built upon two key pillars: a dedication to enhancing personal and institutional comprehension of how equity and inequity function in societies and organizations, and the acquisition of individual and institutional capabilities and determination to identify and rectify instances of inequity while actively fostering equity. When we adopt equity literacy, we strive to become advocates against inequity and proactive agents of change within our spheres of influence. We develop a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to inequities, allowing us to actively work towards their elimination and the establishment of equitable learning environments. If you are able to attend the Student Success Conference, please do.~Andrea https://lnkd.in/gddBwsrC

Curious about the big topics in the North Carolina Community College System this year? The article below gives a great overview! ⬇️ #educate #inspire #support #yourcommunityyourcollege
North Carolina's community colleges are facing a pivotal year in 2024. I have spent the past three months producing a landscape analysis I hope you will take the time to read. One key development will be the potential implementation of Propel NC, a new funding formula that could significantly impact the allocation of resources across the system. Additionally, the introduction of a three-year graduation plan and the mass expansion of Opportunity Scholarships may influence dual enrollment programs. Throughout the year, we will closely monitor these issues and their impact on the community college system in North Carolina. Stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/eSqz2hGD

Kansas State University is routinely recognized for providing one of the best student experiences in the nation, and today was just another example why. In between meetings this week at K-State, I had the opportunity to watch a small part of freshman orientation for the Kansas State University College of Business. Dean Kevin Gwinner did an amazing job talking about the strength of K-State and the college, the opportunities that exist for students, and why K-State was the right choice for parents and students alike. Today also reminded me why so many of us are drawn to higher education: the learners. It also reminded me why the mission of land-grant universities is so important: the people. Yes, universities accomplish their land-grant mission through research and engagement/service/Extension. But universities are nothing without students and learners. And as society evolves, so do the needs and wants of students – who are both traditional students and learners of all types who are seeking to improve their skills, themselves, and their lives. I can say from firsthand experience that K-State is doing this in spades and more, and there is much more to come as the university continues to implement the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan we were honored to help develop. Today was just another example of how and why. Go Cats! Richard Linton, Jesse Perez Mendez
