This session aims to address this need by focusing on expanding AI training and access to nontraditional talents, including students and professionals from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and other peripheral communities. It will feature a panel discussion and potentially an interactive workshop led by prominent figures from academia, industry, and community organizations. Together, we'll explore strategies for tailoring curricula for the unique needs and strengths of these organizations, sharing resources between major tech companies and peripheral educational institutions, fostering talent through mentorships, and more.  

What would a city designed by #AI look like? You may be surprised to hear that AI is already playing a role in shaping #Vancouver in a project led by the students of the Masters of Engineering Leadership. We interviewed Dr. Su-Jan Yeo, an instructor of the #MEL in #UrbanSystems to learn more about this project and the value of student involvement. "In my course in 2023, students worked on a project in partnership with the City of Vancouver and CityStudio Vancouver to leverage AI for community engagement and harmonizing different perspectives and ideas. They described this work as developing a “datadigm” – a play on words bringing together data and paradigm to reflect the paradigm shift needed in how we use data." While there's no denying the benefits of AI in shaping cities, Dr Yeo does emphasize the importance of critical thinking when interpreting its findings. "These potential benefits must be evaluated against equity considerations around who has access to these as well as caution around the quality of the data the AI has learned on." Today, The University of Texas at Dallas held its first AI Day. Victoria McCrady joined me in person and Kathryn Lookadoo online and a huge group of faculty and staff to learn from UTA and Microsoft about GenAI. Kishore Thakur MC'd and organized, and did a fantastic job. Overheard after this event: "What a great way to spend an afternoon." We delved into how AI is reshaping our work. A recurring theme? “GenAI augments human capabilities and streamlines tasks.” However, I see a significant split between GenAI tasks and uses for the corporate sphere and academia, given privacy restrictions for student data. (Given FERPA, think we'll ever be able to plug a grade book or student email about a concern into a GenAI tool?) The big hope: AI is about taking the busy work away, enabling us to focus on creativity and innovation. It’s not about replacing humans -- whether student affairs staff or teaching faculty, but about empowering us to work more efficiently while staying true to our values. Excellent Washington Post article how the AI innovation race is affecting the conditions for #AIresearch in the US, within universities as well as tech companies. I dare say that the situation is not much different in Europe. Most universities are hardly in a position to offer competing salaries or competing access to the resources needed to do critical AI research & innovation. In order to scrutinise the workings and impact of the large GenAI models, the tech companies behind the proprietary models dictate the conditions and terms of engagement (#academic_independence). Many public funding schemes are short-term and risk-averse. Laws like the #AIACT still lack a strong #research_exemption. There is a real task for society, and #governments when developing their #AI_strategies to do some very serious thinking on how to strengthen the role of universities: as places of independent and not-profit driven innovation, as building bridges between CS and SSH disciplines, as talent forges, as critical watchdogs and societies' sparring partner. https://lnkd.in/da2efmn5

GenAI is scoring high on the university Richter scale, with aftershocks accompanying each release. We’re witnessing the largest rollout of AI in educational history, triggered by unprecedented tech investment, extraordinary engineering advances and saturation coverage. Many hopes and fears filled the vacuum of evidence last year, which is an obvious invitation to researchers, some of which is underway here at UTS. However, amidst the urgency for fast tactical responses, we must understand AI in a larger frame. Many sobre-minded people concur that humanity now finds itself at an inflection point. The disruptions to interlocking systems (ecological; political; financial; technological; medical; educational...) feel overwhelming. If we frame the challenge as grappling with this polycrisis (or is that permacrisis?), an implication is that we must equip graduates to engage with the extreme complexity of these dilemmas, harnessing AI to augment our collective intelligence. But if in fact this is also a metacrisis, this reframes our predicament more disturbingly. Do we now find ourselves in “a time between worlds” (Zak Stein)? Should we now be “hospicing modernity” (Vanessa De Oliveira)? Does neuroscience now reveal why we’re struggling to atttend relationally and holistically (Iain McGilchrist)? So, asking what we do about GenAI really leads us to deeper questions: What is the purpose of a university education? Dig deeper, and you end up asking: What does it mean to be fully human? — a question often provoked by advances in AI. (We may not resolve all of these in one session!)
