Black is a colour of power and intensity. It was one of the first colours used in art and has a long standing history of timelessness. Colour is a phenomenon of light and in theory, black is the absence of light. It isn’t a primary, secondary, or tertiary color. In fact, black isn’t on the artist’s color wheel and often isn’t considered a color at all. Instead, black appears when you bring any color to its darkest value (Empty Eisel). In the jewelry world, black gemstones are not commonly used. One of the black gemstones worth noting is black sapphire. They are the darkest variant of the corundum family and hold a niche position in jewelry. Black sapphire is an aluminium oxide and has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. In black sapphires, a considerable level of light is absorbed, rather than being reflected outward, hence its distinct colour. Their colour may actually be very dark blue, green or purple. Intense black hues are most valuable, in both regular and asteriated stones. Most people are familiar with black sapphires because of their variety that displays asterism. Asterism is a phenomenon that causes a gemstone to display a star-shaped pattern of light. Most asteriated sapphires get their “star” from inclusions of rutile or diaspore, but black star sapphires get it from ilmenite or hematite inclusions and the “star” can sometimes exhibit a captivating gold sheen. The infamous Black Star of Queensland is an impressive six-rayed black star sapphire found in Queensland, Australia, in 1938. This 733 carat gem is currently the world’s largest black star sapphire.
