Design Research | Helping organisations make sense of transformative situations through human-founded insights and design-led interventions
Anxiety has a special place in existential and phenomenological thought. Anxiety—in these philosophical lines of inquiry—can lead to a profound sense of wonder about the nature of existence and one’s place within it. Such opportunities for wonder are what might be at stake in the “quieting of the general philosophical anxiety of the [design] field” which Buchanan noted in 2007. At the time, Buchanan found that “most education in art or design, in the haste to prepare a suitable professional, does little to cultivate the sense of wonder or astonishment in students. Problem solving takes priority over problem finding.” The same can be said of today's professional design practice: invention and discovery are relegated to matters of chance rather than being approached as disciplined intellectual exploration. “Only the best teachers [including mentors, leaders and even—perhaps especially—employers and clients],” Buchanan continues, “understand that time and silence are needed by [emerging designers] to open imaginative space for finding the problems that are most important for their creative work.” Space for anxiety, yes—but as the grounds for the moments of wonder and astonishment that make designers effective sensemakers.
What are the possibilities for design—as a sensemaking practice—if designers lean into their disciplinary anxiety? 🌐 Immersed in the Wisdom of Humanity-Centered Design with Sean Carney and Don Norman! 🚀 Grateful for the incredible experience of attending a virtual design masterclass featuring the insightful Sean Carney and the iconic Don Norman. The spotlight was on "Humanity-Centered Design," a concept that sparks both inspiration and contemplation. The session delved deep into the profound impact that design can have on people's lives. One key takeaway for me was the emphasis on crafting solutions that prioritize the well-being, values, and diverse needs of humanity. How can we create designs that not only function flawlessly but also elevate the human experience? In the ever-evolving landscape of design, the call for humanity-centered approaches is more relevant than ever. As designers, it's not just about aesthetics or functionality; it's about understanding the intricate tapestry of human emotions, cultures, and aspirations. A huge shoutout to Sean Carney and Don Norman for their enlightening insights and the organizers for curating this invaluable experience. Let's continue championing humanity-centered design, shaping a future where every innovation resonates with the beating heart of humanity. 🌟 A heartfelt thank you to the Royal College of Art - Executive Education and Design for Good for orchestrating this enlightening masterclass. 🙌Let's continue to push the boundaries of design, fostering a community that understands and embraces its potential to shape a sustainable and user-friendly future. #HumanityCenteredDesign #DesignInnovation #UserExperience #DesignThinking #Inspiration #DonNorman #SeanCarney #Rca

Negative space in design plays a crucial role in creating a balanced and harmonious composition. It is the empty space around and between the subjects in a design that helps to define the relationships between them. Embracing negative space can enhance visual appeal and readability, making the overall design more effective and impactful. Remember, sometimes less is more in design. #designprinciples #negativespace #graphicdesign
