At the first Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC 2024), around 1,600 participants met in the Hanseatic city to forge new alliances for concrete progress in sustainability. Opened by German #Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the conference was also attended by nine other heads of state, 29 ministers and twelve heads of international organizations. German Development Minister Svenja Schulze said, "This conference is a source of encouragement for international cooperation. In the midst of a difficult global situation, the Hamburg Sustainability Conference has breathed new life into a simple insight. With more than 15 agreements, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been given an urgently needed new impetus. In a total of more than 60 events, participants from more than 100 countries not only discussed key global challenges, but also agreed on concrete steps to tackle them. Here are just three examples of HSC 2024 outcomes: @#GreenShipping: With the "Hamburg Declaration on the Decarbonization of Global Shipping," more than a dozen companies agreed to collaborate on the development of sustainable shipping corridors, research and development, knowledge sharing, and investment financing. In addition to Germany also Brazil and Denmark are supporting the initiative but also mayor shipping companies like CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd AG or MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company or international ports like Port of Los Angeles, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Yokohama Port Corporation or Port of Hamburg. #GreenAviation: The ten signatories of the "Hamburg Declaration on Green Aviation" also agreed to work together to develop "green aviation hubs" in the areas of research and development, knowledge sharing and financing. The signatories include Hamburg Airport, Deutsche Post und DHL AG and the South African company Sasol. #GreenMobility: The Global Battery Alliance stands for the sustainable production of batteries along the entire supply chain and is currently working on setting a global sustainability standard. The HSC agreement that Germany and Serbia are joining the mission, and Zambia has also announced its accession, contributes to the establishment of sustainability criteria along the entire value chain of battery production, from raw material producers to OEMs. The next HSC, which will take place on 2-3 June 2025 in Hamburg, is planned for an annual cycle. Coordinator Faculty of Science & Engineering Science Newsroom, University of Groningen and Freelance science writer (Nederlands, English): news stories, press releases, (grant) editing & more
Here is another story I wrote for Faculty of Science and Engineering - University of Groningen: European Green Deal: a double-edged sword for global emissions (ook in Nederlands). (TLDR: it doesn't deliver) The European Union aims to be carbon-neutral by 2050 as part of the comprehensive Green Deal that was agreed upon four years ago. However, an analysis of the policy documents outlining the practical measures of the Green Deal shows that it will decrease carbon emissions in Europe, but also increase carbon emissions outside of the EU. This increase is more than double the carbon emissions saved by the Green Deal. This analysis was published in Nature Sustainability on 20 September by an international team of scientists led by Klaus Hubacek, Professor of Science, Technology and Society at the University of Groningen. Lucia Pagani, who is responsible for Gruppo Volta 71's Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System, attended "Together Toward 2030". The event was organized by IMQ eambiente and took place at Palazzo Labia in Venice. It brought together companies that are actively committed to reducing CO2 and climate-changing emissions, implementing budgets, or following sustainability paths. IMQ eAmbiente has long been committed to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda. On this evening, they presented the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) through the testimonies of entrepreneurs and managers. The approach was direct and concrete, with a decisive intervention from the new generations. An important signal was sent out, making 2030 a tangible goal for everyone and not just a symbolic year! #GruppoVolta71 #Agenda2030 #IMQeAmbiente #2030Goals #SustainableFuture #SustainableBusiness
