The main gap in Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) is the high cost and limited efficiency of current technologies, which hinders their scalability and widespread adoption. LDES also faces challenges in grid integration and technological maturity, with several solutions still in the developmental stage. To advance the energy transition, breakthroughs in materials science, efficiency improvements, modular system designs, and enhanced grid integration are essential. Alongside these technological advancements, supportive policies and market structures are needed to reduce costs, incentivize adoption, and optimize the role of LDES in stabilizing renewable energy supply.
