🎤 I Won! Reflecting on my FameLab Journey🌞 Two weeks ago, I had the amazing opportunity to compete in the FameLab International Swiss final with my talk, "Jumping Elephants and the Great Solar Leap." Using elephotons (yes, I turned photons into elephants! 🐘) to explain the physics of solar energy, I broke down why solar cells aren’t 100% efficient. More importantly, I used comparisons to bring the numbers to life. As a nanoscientist and teacher, I’ve always been obsessed with scale—numbers only matter when you understand their context. I made sure the audience “minded the scale” by showing why solar cells, despite their limitations, deserve more room to shine. 🌞 🎥You can watch the 3-min performance here: https://lnkd.in/dscM2BcU FameLab was a unique challenge—explaining a topic from my PhD in just 3 minutes, without the comfort of PowerPoint, and to a general audience. But beyond the science, it was a powerful opportunity for personal growth. It pushed me to refine my storytelling, build confidence, and make meaningful connections. I learned that effective communication isn’t just about simplifying complex ideas; it’s about connecting with your audience and tailoring your message to resonate in each interaction. These are skills I’ll carry with me far beyond the stage—wherever the future leads. So, despite not being selected to represent Switzerland internationally, I feel comfortable saying that I won! Big thanks to the organizing team (Silvie Cuperus et al.—you might leave academia, but academia never leaves you!) as well as jury members Fanny Georgi Martin Gilbert Thomas Michaels. And congrats to the winner, Sivaniya Subramaniapillai—she’ll rock it on the international stage!

As we gathered to celebrate the closing of the 2022-2024 GIID Global Network, Ted Hyman, FAIA Hyman, one of our newest advisors, offered reflections on his engagement with our districts and his observations regarding innovation districts worldwide.   Initially, Ted anticipated his involvement would mainly revolve around the built environment. However, as he engaged with fellow participants, he realized that the scope transcended physical structures. It's about envisioning the future and crafting spaces to realize that vision.   Ted worked with various districts like Oslo Science City, Knowledge District in Zuidas Amsterdam, and Phoenix Bioscience Core, each with its unique geography and culture. Yet, despite their differences, Ted discovered that “the problems all were really kind of the same. It's really a microcosm of how we think about cities. … putting the residential over there, and the academic over there and the church someplace else. This idea, how will we bring these things back together is very much the kinds of problems you're dealing with.”   In closing, Ted emphasized that his engagement was as beneficial to him as it was to others, highlighting the collaborative spirit and mutual learning ethos that define the GIID Global Network.   With the unwavering dedication of all participants, we are poised to continue shaping the future of innovation districts worldwide.   #InnovationDistricts #GlobalNetwork #Collaboration

I just want to share a truly enriching experience I had recently. I was privileged to attend an Aztec naming ceremony organized by Tletl Papalotzin, graciously invited by my student, Emma (Toxtle). This event not only showcased the vibrant traditions of the Mexicah diaspora, whose lineage traverses numerous tribes, but also served as a powerful conduit for advocating the rights and preserving the identities of indigenous and all marginalized communities. Our engagement with these ceremonies highlights the ongoing need for recognition and justice, aligning closely with the narratives of colonization and displacement we explore in the classroom. These discussions are not just historical reviews; they are calls to action for equity, recognition, and respect across global and temporal landscapes. Let us remind ourselves of the harsh realities of colonization, remembering that history provides us lessons as we continue to see parallels in the challenges that various communities face today and might face in the future. Displacement, often a direct result of these systemic injustices, severely impacts economic mobility. In my work within the nonprofit sector focusing on economic mobility, we strive to address these challenges by creating pathways that not only aid immediate recovery but also empower long-term economic resilience and stability.
