“The costs of NTDs and EIDs are vast, in both human and economic terms. CEPI’s ambitious programmes aim to substantially reduce global epidemic and pandemic risk by the developing vaccines to help save lives, protect societies and restabilise economies. Investing in R&D is key to protect people from these diseases”, said CEPI’s Translational Immunology Lead Christine Dahlke at a meeting at the German Parliament Thursday 27 June. Germany is increasing its research into neglected tropical diseases, but this increase is below the average of the ten most productive countries in the world. In addition, research funding in this area has declined since 2018 shows a study commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Research under the leadership of the Bernhard-Nocht-Institut für Tropenmedizin . Drs. Veronique Dartois and Thomas Dick have a major new review in the journal Nature Reviews Drug Discovery which assesses the drug pipeline for tuberculosis and its proliferating cousins, non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). They have a suggestion: "We argue that applying paradigms and networks that have proved successful for TB, from basic research to clinical trials, will help to populate the pipeline and accelerate curative regimen development for NTM disease," the scientists write. Review by Nayeli Shantal Castrejón-Jiménez, Blanca Estela García-Pérez, Nydia Edith Reyes-Rodríguez, Vicente Vega-Sánchez, Víctor Manuel Martínez-Juárez and Juan Carlos Hernández-González丨Type I Challenges in the Detection of SARS-CoV-2: Evolution of the Lateral Flow Immunoassay as a Valuable Tool for Viral Diagnosis https://lnkd.in/gFXcsMbZ MDPI; Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo; Instituto Politécnico Nacional #SARSCoV2 #COVID #coronavirus #LateralFlow #Immunoassay #infectious #pandemic #openaccess #Abstract SARS-CoV-2 is an emerging infectious disease of zoonotic origin that caused the coronavirus disease in late 2019 and triggered a pandemic that has severely affected human health and caused millions of deaths. Early and massive diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients is the key to preventing the spread of the virus and controlling the outbreak. Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIA) are the simplest biosensors. These devices are clinical diagnostic tools that can detect various analytes, including viruses and antibodies, with high sensitivity and specificity. This review summarizes the advantages, limitations, and evolution of LFIA during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the challenges of improving these diagnostic devices.

The WHO has called antimicrobial resistance (AMR) "one of the top ten global public health threats to humanity in the 21st century". This statement is no exaggeration: in 2019, an estimated 1.3 million deaths the direct result of AMR; AMR also contributed to an estimated 4.95 million global deaths in the same year. AMR is a silent killer: it kills by making treatments fail, rather than manifesting as a disease with a recognisable set of symptoms. It is, therefore, no surprise that AMR is called the "silent pandemic". Nature Communications, Nature Medicine, Communications Medicine, and Scientific Reports, have launched an open call for papers on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We aim to publish research articles spanning the breadth of AMR and across microbial pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites). You can find details of this forthcoming collection, and information on how to submit, by using this link: https://lnkd.in/dvuyUiKU Happy submitting! #InTheLifeOfAMedicalScientist #TBResearch👩🏼🔬🦠🧬💊❤️ 🏥 Some days are tough yet purposeful, spending long hours in Biosafety Level 3 lab😷🥱contained for doing experiments with infectious Tuberculosis (TB) specimen with live M. tuberculosis. Currently being testing one of the potent anti-TB drug TMC207, that was approved few years ago for treatment of Multi-drug Resistant, and doing multiple experiments in M. tuberculosis and it’s been great regardless of how challenging it gets, the long hours in the lab and too much concentration, just knowing this adds value to saving lives somehow it’s worth the time and sacrifice🥹🤍.
