Today I had a fantastic conversation with the inspiring Dame Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on Antimicrobial Resistance, at Clinton Global Initiative about AMR. At PATH, we recognize AMR as a global threat, claiming an estimated 1.27 million lives in 2019. Climate change and other crises are further exacerbating this issue. That's why PATH advocates for a One Health approach, acknowledging the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Prevention is key. Vaccines remain one of our most effective tools, and PATH's Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access (CVIA) has been a leader in global immunization efforts for decades. Additionally, strengthening of diagnostics and surveillance is crucial to track resistance patterns and enable rapid responses. Governments, global organizations, and private sector must partner and come together with communities to: Strengthen immunization and diagnostics Invest in new antibiotic research Secure sustained funding for AMR prevention and response Address antibiotics misuse across sectors Now during #UNGA79, I'm feeling energized and optimistic that we can tackle AMR together - and safeguard global health for future generations. Contain any outbreak and prevent sanitary, human, socioeconomic and societal consequences is a quality of any good leader. Thus investments in healthy resilient, educated population, surveillance, laboratory and healthcare infrastructures - cooperation. Public health agencies and governments across the globe are always readying their response for the next infectious disease emergency, but how do we prepare for the truly unknown? Enter Disease X. Since 2018, this mysterious—and often misrepresented—hypothetical pathogen has been at the heart of international pandemic preparedness efforts. Planning for the emergence of an as-yet unknown infectious pathogen could mean a swifter, more effective public health response. Do we have any idea where and when Disease X could arise? It could be arising right now. The human species has always been affected by infectious disease pandemics. There could be the first jumps of a virus into a human population somewhere, and maybe 90% of the people who get it have a common coldlike illness, or what appears to be garden variety pneumonia, and nobody tests for that. And it could arise anywhere... We have to be open to the fact that it could come from any place where there are humans, in any place where there are animals, which is basically the entire globe. Who is involved in the preparedness planning for a Disease X pandemic? I would say the bulk of the preparedness is happening with the WHO and other public health agencies like CDC, the European CDC, the UK Health Security Agency, as well as the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority at the NIH. It involves the United Nations, and essentially all levels of government, plus business organizations like the World Economic Forum. It trickles all the way down to the state and local health department levels as well as even individual hospitals and health care facilities. It also includes pharmaceutical companies that are thinking about vaccine platform technologies and how quickly they can ramp up as necessary. Multisectoral involvement because preparedness is not just medical countermeasures, it's also societal responses and business continuity. How prepared do you think we are now? Are we more prepared than we were for COVID? Probably. But are we fully prepared? No. Have we solved hospital capacity problems? No. Do we have domestic manufacturers of masks? No, most of them have stopped manufacturing after COVID-19 [began to subside]. Do we have a population that wants to embrace new technologies like vaccines and antivirals? No. https://lnkd.in/d8KJx6vD

I’m sharing this new communication from US with a similar initiative implemented recently in th European countries. In my opinion, in both cases the relevance given to the influenza virus as a potential future pandemia (including an eventual avian H5N1 strain adapted to human) is evident, but what I really perceive in a positive way is the proactive approach in response to the previous lessons with COVID are driving these centralized organizations to coordinate a multidisciplinary work with public and private sector following the same porpoises, based on sciences evidence and innovation that finally demonstrate why’s the One Health approach really important.

https://lnkd.in/eaWEbWNY Day 2 highlights How can we anticipate and combat climate-accelerated infectious diseases? This is becoming an increasingly important issue as ‘tropical’ diseases begin to spread to other regions. Enhanced surveillance is an important first step, along with strengthening of public health systems. Can we use AI systems for predictive modelling of vector spread and disease outbreaks? Management of ecosystems to improve biodiversity and allow natural vector control, together with vector control through targeted approaches will be important. But inevitably improved vaccines will be required. A focus on innovation to keep pace with pathogen evolution will be important, as will equitable distribution to ensure that vaccines are accessible to the most affected communities.

Before Winston Peters as DPM and Chris Hipkins as Minster of Health and Megan Woods as Minister of Science oversaw the acquisition of mRNA technologies to inject into the NZ population there had been substantial preparation for the event declared as a PHEIC, pronounced F-A-K-E. Part of that preparation was: - the WHO declaring the need to prepare for a pandemic in March 2019 https://lnkd.in/gcYhBv6z - the father of Donald Trump Jr. issuing Executive Order 13887 in September 2019 to improve vaccine manufacture - Christopher Luxon in November 2019 saying no jab no pay https://lnkd.in/gPu8BeWw So before all of the world was thrown into panic as a result of a 'novel coronavirus' in 2020 the 'lets just get ready for a pandemic' operation had a table top event called Event 201. And they knew: "Some experiments have raised the possibility that immunity incurred from certain coronavirus vaccines can be short lived and that enhanced disease may result from certain coronavirus vaccines. This has prompted some concern that vaccines targeting coronaviruses (eg, MERS, SARS) could lead to adverse events." https://lnkd.in/ggi8RDEi And NOW they want an Inquiry? Better still lets have a Tribunal and take the responsibility for governance of the people out of the hands of those who did this since they either knew and ignored it (ignorance), knew and did it anyway (negligence) or knew and did it for profit (malice a forethought).

Are the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic being applied for effective outbreak preparedness by all parties, from industry to government to community; for the next crisis? A highly virulent strain of Monkey Pox (Mpox) is spreading with more than 100,000 cases confirmed in 122 total countries and the U.S. along has reported 33,000 cases. Additional clade variants of the mpox virus are also spreading and mutating, reflecting the reality that addressing Mpox on a global scale will continue to be a pressing public health issue. Industry is taking the initiative with new clinical trials for vaccines and rapid testing platforms. The commitment from the Biden administration in the recently announced pledge of 1 million Mpox vaccine doses and at least $500 million in funds to support African countries in their response to the outbreak, is obviously appropriate and appreciated. But this needs to be a multi-prong effort to support the developmental work by multiple industry partners, by government for addressing the regulatory pathway and data analysis, and by community leaders to “not take their eye off the ball”. The goal should be to avoid a pandemic with a thoughtful, coordinated, multi-stakeholder, global response and taking preemptive steps that can ensure the equitable access to vaccines and testing that supports data for the measure of success.
