ChlorTainer provides City of Redlands, CA residents with chemical safety measures, since 2004 Seventy miles east of downtown Los Angeles sits the City of Redlands in the State of California. This quiet community, with views of the San Bernardino Mountains, is home to roughly 73,000 people. This community receives its drinking water from two separate watersheds, one of these watersheds is handled by the Henry Tate Treatment Plant, which uses chlorine gas to disinfect and process an average of 8 million gallons of water daily. The Tate facility, which was designed to handle up to 20 million gallons a day, uses two 1-Ton ChlorTainer vessels to protect against a potential chlorine gas leak. Each vessel holds a container of chlorine gas, adding an extra layer of security in case the cylinder is compromised. The city installed the ChlorTainer vessels in 2004 and has not experienced a leak. The department hosted its five-year inspection with Cal/OSHA, otherwise known as the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, which sets and enforces regulations on workplace safety. Paul Mariscal, the city’s Water Production Operations Supervisor, noted some of the junior inspectors and engineers had not yet seen a ChlorTainer system in action, and he explained its operation as a fail-safe in case of a leak. “They were impressed by it." “I don’t anticipate any major expenditures associated with it,” he continued. “It’s pretty robust. If it lasted a hundred years, it wouldn’t shock me.” Industry experts widely recognize ChlorTainer as the safest technology for chemical processing and leak mitigation. There's lots of dangerous jobs out there. I get it. From the oil fields to the coal mines, from Alaskan crabbing to law enforcement. These folks know what they are signing up for and do it anyways. But just because a job is inherently dangerous, like Sterile Processing, doesn't mean that we - as an industry - can't and shouldn't be actively engaged in finding ways to make it safer. 👉 Can we reduce chemical burns? 👉 Can we guard against sterilant exposure? 👉 Can we protect our teams from unnecessary sharps risks? 👉 Can we address slips and falls in our decontamination areas? 👉 Can we design away major ergonomic injury factors across our workflows? Our team members in Sterile Processing should not have to choose between being clinical or being safe. Both are possible, and in fact, both are our responsibility as clinical leaders. When sampling monitoring wells, a question we get asked a lot is, “How long will it take to get the results?” Once the groundwater samples are collected and placed in appropriate containers, we drop them off at the laboratory. Some analyses require being shipped to a lab but we’re fortunate that most analyses can be performed locally. A document known as the chain-of-custody lets the lab know what analyses to run. The containers are labeled so the results can be matched to their corresponding monitoring well. Typically, turnaround time is a week (3-5 days). Most labs offer expedited processing for additional costs. Some laboratories have online offerings so you can track the samples’ progression. Once the lab results are available, be mindful of regulatory reporting requirements. Some agencies require being notified within 24-hours of the results.
